TaylorMade Ranks No. 1 in Five Club Categories at Mercedes Championships; Wins Putter Count for the First Time in Company History
CARLSBAD, Calif. (January 6, 2006) – TaylorMade-adidas Golf Company rang in the New Year in style yesterday by winning the brand counts in drivers, fairway woods, irons, hybrids and putters at the Mercedes Championships.** It was the first time that TaylorMade has ranked No. 1 in putters at a PGA Tour event in the company’s 27-year history.
TaylorMade’s r7â?¢ quad driver, which won every driver model count on the PGA Tour last year, did not rank as the No. 1 model at the Mercedes.** According to the Darrell Survey, the No. 1 driver model, in its PGA Tour debut, is TaylorMade’s new r7 425. Players using it include Sergio Garcia, Sean O’Hair, Fred Funk, Peter Lonard and Kenny Perry. With a total of 9 drivers in play at the Mercedes compared to six by the nearest competitor, TaylorMade also extended its driver brand count streak to 205 events, dating back to August 2001.**
The 425 incorporates TaylorMade’s renowned Movable Weight Technologyâ?¢ (MWTâ?¢) with 28 grams of movable weight in a 425 cc titanium clubhead, as well as a new shaft that features a new technology co-developed with Fujikura that enhances stability and consistency. Though the 425 is being played for the first time on the PGA Tour this week, it has previously appeared in professional competition – Darren Clarke used one and praised it while competing at last November’s Target World Challenge.
Players using TaylorMade’s Rossa putters with Anti-skid Groove System Insertâ?¢ (AGSIâ?¢) technology at the Mercedes include Garcia (Corza), O’Hair (Corza), Funk (Corza), Perry (Corza), Lonard (Daytona) and Tim Petrovic (Sebring). AGSI employs 12 milled grooves that promote forwardspin off the putterface, not backspin, to reduce skid and bounce in order to help get the ball rolling sooner. The result is greater accuracy and enhanced distance control.
"The fact that the r7 425 is the top-ranked driver model in its PGA Tour debut says a lot about this driver’s performance, and is a testament to our commitment to creating better and better performing golf clubs," said Chuck Presto, Vice President of Global Sports Marketing, TaylorMade-adidas. "We’re equally proud that Rossa ranked No. 1 in the putter count. We work long and hard to create performance technologies in every club category, such as AGSI in putters. It’s extremely rewarding when the finest players have the faith in these technologies to put them into play."
