The Women’s Carolinas Golf Association has announced the 2006 sites and dates for their junior girls’ golf tournaments.
The 50th Carolinas Junior Girls’ Golf Championship will be held June 26-29 at Alamance Country Club in Burlington, N.C. The format is stroke play qualifying, followed by match play. June 26 will be a practice round.
The 40th Twin States Junior Girls’ Golf Championship will be held July 25-27 at The University Club in Blythewood, S.C. The format is 36 holes of stroke play. July 25 will be a practice round.
Each summer, these tournaments rotate between North and South Carolina. All girls age 18 and under who live in North Carolina or South Carolina, and have not entered college, are eligible to play.
In each tournament, sub-juniors (age 12 and under) play nine-hole rounds, while juniors play eighteen-hole rounds. Players are flighted according to scores from a qualifying round played the first day of each tournament.
The Carolinas Junior Girls’ Championship was first played in 1956 at Alamance Country Club. The WCGA is excited about being able to return to Alamance in 2006 for the 50th anniversary. The first event was won by Mary Hewitt. Other past champions include Sherri Turner, Kelly Tilghman, Mallory Hetzel, and Amber Littman. The 2005 tournament was won by Corrine Carr of Pinehurst, N.C., and was played at Bay Tree Golf Plantation in North Myrtle Beach, S.C.
The Twin States Junior Girls’ Championship was first played in 1967 at Pinehurst Country Club in Pinehurst, NC. Debra Rhodes was the first champion. Other past champions include Beth Daniel, Marcy Newton, Taylor Barrett, and Emily Street. The 2005 tournament was won by Sydney Crane of Jamestown, N.C., and was played at the Country Club of North Carolina in Pinehurst, N.C.
