MAGGIE VALLEY, N.C. – As part of its transformation to an upscale private club, the new Maggie Valley Club is in the midst of a $6 million clubhouse renovation and redesign.
When complete, the clubhouse will provide 18,000 square feet of amenities for members and guests. The "new" facility will include multiple dining options with patios overlooking the golf course, an expanded fitness center, full-service banquet space, men’s and women’s locker rooms, and a revamped golf shop.
The exterior of the clubhouse will have a rustic, southern Appalachian motif with shaker shingles framing the sides and roof. Meanwhile, the interior will provide an upscale, casual feeling with modern furnishings and wood accents.
"Our clubhouse was functional in the past, but it wasn’t very aesthetically pleasing or memorable," said head golf professional Mike Fox. "Now, we have an appealing clubhouse that offers all the things a country club should offer. It’s larger and more user-friendly with outdoor seating to enjoy the picturesque views of the mountains and the golf course."
The project’s first phase – building a 1,600 square-foot detached golf shop – was finished in late April. This allowed golf operations to move from the bottom level of the old structure into a state-of-the-art building overlooking the first tee. The golf shop interior features custom-made cabinets, expanded merchandise and apparel lines, and large bay windows on three sides.
"We’ve gone from a basic front desk counter to beautiful customer counters and displays. There’s more window space than wall space. You can look out one side and see the Valley Nine and look out the other and see the Mountain Nine," said Fox. "People are struck by the ‘wow’ factor when they walk in, which is also what we expect when they see the completed clubhouse."
The project began in April of 2005 and will continue in phases through the summer and fall. The architect is John Templeton with Foxhollow Goodson Architecture of Knoxville, Tenn. Howard Tutwiler of Montgomery, Ala., is the interior designer, and the general contractor is Clark & Leatherwood of nearby Waynesville.
