Home Again Lewton Ready For A Czech Out

July 27, 2006

Stephen Lewton (Woburn), home from college in the United States, is one of three top players who will represent the EGU in the Czech Amateur Championship at Prosper Golf Club, Celadna, on 9th -12th August.

He will be accompanied by Danny Belch (Hillside) and Lawrence Dodd (Thetford), the trio making up the England team that will compete in the Nations Cup.

Lewton, 23 (pictured left – photo courtesy of Tom Ward), is on a scholarship at North Carolina State University and has enjoyed considerable success on the college golf circuit. Before crossing the Atlantic, Lewton was an England under 16 and boy cap who twice finished runner-up in the McEvoy Trophy and represented England in the World Boys Team Championships in Japan and in the European Boys Team Championships in Poland.

He was also a quarter-finalist in the British Boys Championship and won the individual prize in the EGU South East Qualifying in 2005. Recently, he reached the last 16 of the Amateur Championship at Sandwich having put out Walker Cup man Oliver Fisher in the second round.

Belch, 24, a member of the England A Squad, is a former winner of the Tillman Trophy, who finished runner-up in the EGU Northern Qualifying in 2005. This year, he has finished tied third in the Duncan Putter and tied sixth in the Irish Open Amateur.

Dodd, 22, made his full international debut in the Home Internationals at Prestwick in 2004 and he is now in the England A Squad. In 2005 he won the Hampshire Hog and finished equal fourth in the Berkshire Trophy. This year a second place in the Selborne Salver, third place in the Hampshire Hog and equal third in the Lytham Trophy, suggests he is still in good form.

The Czech Amateur Championship attracts an international field, which will be cut to the leading 70 players and ties after two rounds. There will be a further cut after 54 holes when the best 40 players and ties will contest the final round.

The Nations Cup will be decided over the opening two rounds, the best two scores from three to count each day.

Scores during the championship can be found by using the link on the EGU website homepage at www.englishgolfunion.org or on the Czech Golf Federation website at www.cgf.cz.
