August, 2006 – Jim Furyk has confirmed he will play in the 2006 HSBC World Match Play Championship at Wentworth Club, September 14-17.
Furyk, the 2003 US Open Champion and current World Number 4, qualifies through the HSBC Major Championships Ranking, having finished 2nd in the 2006 US Open Championship and 4th in the 135th Open Championship. Furyk, who won the 2006 Wachovia Championship and finished 2nd at the Buick Open last week, joins World Number 1, Tiger Woods, Defending Champion Michael Campbell, current European Order of Merit leader, David Howell, and England’s Simon Khan in accepting their places in the 16-man field.
Competing for the richest first prize in world golf of £1 million and the Mark McCormack Trophy, Furyk enthused;
"I am delighted to have qualified for the HSBC World Match Play Championship. I haven’t played in it before and have heard it is a fantastic event. I am really looking forward to the different challenges a match play event offers and the 36-hole Match play format makes it a good tournament to play ahead of the 2006 Ryder Cup Matches the following week. The history of the event with its amazing list of past winners and the strength of the field makes it one I would really like to win."
