Nigel Chesters and Paul Griffiths (pictured left – photo courtesy of Tom Ward), joint winners last year, will defend the title when the English Open Mid-Amateur Championship for the Logan Trophy takes place at Hayling Golf Club in Hampshire on 25th – 27th August.
The pair tied on 212, four under par, on a dramatic final day at Delamere Forest last August and are likely to be among the front-runners again this time.
Two more former champions are also competing, Steve Sansome from Leicestershire, winner in 2004 at Fairhaven, and Yorkshire-based Barry Downing, champion at Ponteland in 2000.
The field of 132 also includes a trio of England senior internationals, David Lane, Jonathan Marks and Michael Wigley. Lane, 65, is a former British, English and Scottish seniors champion, while Marks, 64, won the English seniors title in 1998.
Both represented England in the European Seniors Team Championships in Finland earlier this month, while Wigley, 57, earned his first seniors cap in last year’s Seniors Home Internationals in Ireland.
Among the younger challengers will be several regulars on the amateur circuit including Martin Young from Hampshire, a former winner of the Lagonda Trophy, Craig Buttivant and Steve Barwick from BB&O, and Dorset’s Giles Legg.
Other competitors include Devon stalwart Graham Ruth (Tavistock), the father of England international James Ruth, Michael Anthony from Sussex, third last year, and Ian Barker (Burhill), who captained Surrey to the English County Championship in 2004.
The Logan Trophy is open to players over 35 years of age, is played over 54 holes with a cut after 36, the leading 45 players and ties going through to the final round. The Championship was inaugurated in 1988 when Peter McEvoy was the first winner.
