SUNRIVER, Ore., Aug. 29, 2006 — Crosswater at Sunriver Resort has made a dramatic climb up the "Top 100 You Can Play," GOLF Magazine’s biennial list of the top daily-fee golf courses in the country. Crosswater ascended from #52 to #34, the largest jump of any course that made the list both in 2004 and again in 2006.
The state of Oregon was represented by five courses in the Top 100; Crosswater is the lone layout located east of the Cascade Mountains.
GOLF Magazine announced the listing in its September issue, which recently hit the newsstands.
"We’re understandably thrilled about the ranking," said Tom Luersen, vice president and managing partner, Sunriver Resort. "When one looks at the list from top to bottom, and considers some of the fine courses that didn’t even make the Top 100, it shows what exclusive company we’re in. Moreover, this adds an exclamation mark to Sunriver Resort’s stature in the golf world."
Earlier this month, organizers of the JELD-WEN Tradition, the season’s final major on the Champions Tour, announced that Sunriver Resort and its Crosswater course will be the new home for the tournament for at least the next four years beginning in 2007. Tournament organizers also announced that NBC would televise the weekend rounds (except in 2008 when it conflicts with the Summer Olympics), providing significant national exposure for the resort, which is located 15 miles south of Bend. (For the past four years, the JELD-WEN Tradition had been held at The Reserve Vineyards and Golf Club in Aloha, Ore.)
A panel comprised of PGA sections directors, regional golf association directors, golf writers and other respected members of the golf community voted on the "Top 100 You Can Play" from a list of more than 400 daily-fee, resort, and semi-private courses nominated by the editors of GOLF Magazine. Members of the public who played more than 20 courses on the list were also invited to vote through the magazine’s web site, GOLFONLINE.com.
This is the third consecutive time that Crosswater has been singled out, having made the list in both 2004 and 2002. In February, Sunriver Resort earned GOLF Magazine’s prestigious "Gold Medal" ranking as one of the country’s 25 best golf resorts.
Crosswater has served as the host course for several events of note during its first 11 years, including several NCAA championship tournaments and a televised "Shell’s Wonderful World of Golf" match between John Daly and Fred Couples. In addition, when George W. Bush became the first sitting president ever to pay a visit to Central Oregon in 2003, he found time in his schedule to play Crosswater. Next June, Crosswater will play host to the PGA Professional National Championship, which was founded in 1968 and is televised live by The Golf Channel.
The golf holes on the par-72, 7,683-yard course meander around two pristine rivers and boast spectacular views of Mt. Bachelor. The expansive bent grass fairways and greens are well guarded by water and superbly maintained bunkers. The golf course is difficult but fair with a collection of memorable holes, particularly the four par-fives.
Crosswater also is one of "America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses," as named by Golf Digest.
In addition to Crosswater, which is a Bob Cupp-John Fought co-design, Sunriver Resort also features the Meadows (a Fought solo design) and Woodlands (a Robert Trent Jones, Jr. design) golf courses, as well as state-of-the-art practice facilities and an Academy of Golf. The resort offers several attractive golf packages as well.
