Pellucid Corp. reports the industry suffered a setback in July with the combination of declining rounds against the backdrop of more favorable weather compare to year-ago. Golf Datatech’s recently-released figures report of a 1% decrease in rounds played for the month while Pellucid showed a 9% favorability in Golf Playable Hours (GPH) for the period.
This marks the 3rd month in golf’s reversal of fortune as rounds performance through the first 4 months of 2006 outperformed the weather favorability on a utilization-adjusted basis. In May however, the first decrease in rounds played coupled with very favorable weather put the Weather-Adjusted Rounds Point Differential measure in negative territory for the month and the year-to-date. July is the third consecutive month of rounds deficits all of which have played out against positive weather trends suggesting that the industry performance is slightly worse than it would appear. On a July year-to-date basis, rounds performance trails weather favorability by 3.1 points. For reference, on an annualized national basis, each point deficit to the weather performance represents a lost opportunity of roughly 5.1MM rounds!
Pellucid President Jim Koppenhaver comments on this reversal of fortune in the key summer months, "After a positive spring season, it appears that we just can’t get (or produce) a break. Although the deficits in rounds over the past 3 months haven’t been very large, they come during the key summer season when the majority of rounds are historically played based on 100% of the country being operational.
The July figures show the importance of Pellucid’s capability to track weather performance lest we as an industry say we’re only down a percent or two and blame it on weather."
In August weather results, Pellucid showed the month to be up 9% in GPH in part due to favorability against a storm-filled August of 2005 which produced a relatively low base. In breadth of performance for the year-to-date period, 16 regions are showing increases in GPH of 2% or more while only 4 regions trail 2005 by more than 2%. The remaining 4 Pellucid regions are neutral vs. last year (+/-2%) on the GPH measure. More detail on the results from national level down to individual facility can be obtained through combinations of Pellucid’s Weather Impact Analyses: The Regional Weather Impact Tracking report, the Facility 10-year Weather Impact Trend report, the Facility Annual Weather Impact Analysis and the Facility Monthly Weather Impact Tracking report at prices beginning under $100 per facility.
Koppenhaver concludes, "Taking our performance measures down to individual facility level, each 1 point deficit to weather at an average US facility translates to a lost opportunity of roughly 325 rounds. Given the current economic conditions, most smart operators we talk to say it’s in their best interest to know that sooner vs.
later and address it through programs vs. the historical grassroots response of "It’s the weather."
