(TUCSON.) – The PGA TOUR announced today the recipients of the 2006 Volunteer of the Year and Charity of the Year awards. The honors were presented by PGA TOUR Chief of Operations Henry Hughes and TOUR player Scott Verplank during meetings with the PGA TOUR tournaments at the World Golf Championships – Accenture Match Play Championship.
Charity of the Year
Any Baby Can – Valero Texas Open
Any Baby Can’s primary focus is to assist families with children who have serious illness, disabilities or special needs. The funds from this award will be used to employ an additional parent educator to ensure that families are assessed and admitted into the program without any delay.
At the present time, there are approximately 10 families on the waiting list desperately in need of assistance.
"Having one of the charities associated with the Valero Texas Open chosen as the 2006 PGA TOUR Charity of the Year is a true privilege," said Tony Piazzi, President & CEO of the Valero Texas Open of San Antonio. "Any Baby Can is an incredibly worthy and well-respected organization that meets the needs of so many. This honor will help to ensure that any child in crisis has a place to turn. San Antonio truly appreciates the acknowledgement by the TOUR of the good work being done in the Alamo City."
Volunteer of the Year
Marty Sheets – Wyndham Championship
Marty Sheets has served as a volunteer at the Wyndham Championship for the past 15 years as a standard bearer. Throughout this period, he has carried the scores of many golfers with a smile on his face through birdies, bogeys and sunny and rainy skies.
Sheets represents the selflessness of the North Carolina Piedmont Triad. His dedication, excitement, positive attitude and friendship to those he comes in contact with are all models for what all volunteers should strive to become.
"Marty Sheets is a big part of what our golf tournament is all about. His devotion to his volunteer work with the tournament is unmatched, and his enthusiasm is contagious. Marty is very deserving of this high PGA TOUR honor, and we are proud to have him on our team," said Wyndham Championship tournament director Mark Brazil.
"The PGA TOUR is proud of all of the volunteers who help to make each tournament happen. Marty Sheets has shown such great dedication throughout the years. Without volunteers like Marty, our tournaments and our TOUR would not be able to make such significant contributions to the communities in which we play," said PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem. "We thank charities like Any Baby Can for reminding us that this sport isn’t just about birdies and bogeys. On behalf of the entire PGA TOUR, I want to personally thank Any Baby Can and Marty Sheets for all that they do. We sincerely appreciate their efforts and sacrifice."
