(Ponte Vedra Beach, FL) – Champions Tour member Doug Tewell will be out of action indefinitely due to acute pain in his left elbow. The eight-time Champions Tour winner began experiencing pain in the elbow during the final round of the Allianz Championship, February 11, in Boca Raton, FL. The Edmond, OK resident was forced to withdraw from the Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am last week following his pro-am round and from this week’s ACE Group Classic in Naples, FL.
Tewell, a four-time winner on the PGA TOUR, has been advised by his doctors not to play golf until the pain is gone. This isn’t the first time Tewell has been sidelined with elbow problems. He underwent major elbow surgery in September of 1995 that caused him to miss all of the 1996 season.
Tewell joined the Champions Tour in October of 1999, following his 50th birthday August 27th. The former Oklahoma State Cowboy won three times in his rookie year, including the Senior PGA Championship, and was named the Champions Tour Rookie of the Year in 2000. Tewell’s last victory on the Champions Tour came at the 2004 Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn.
