ATLANTA – February 26, 2007 Srixon Staff Professional Henrik Stenson won the World Golf Championships – Accenture Match Play Championship on Sunday, February 25, 2007 in his first tournament as a PGA TOUR member. Stenson won the 36-hole final match over the defending champion and 2006 U.S. Open winner 2-and-1 using Srixon’s I-506 irons and Z-UR prototype golf ball. He won $1.35 million and picked up 4,725 FedExCup points and is now in 9th place in that race. Stenson, who won just three weeks ago at the Dubai Classic-beating out the world’s number 1 player-is now ranked 5th in the world and 1st in the European Tour’s Order of Merit.
In a dramatic see-saw battle that saw the lead change hands five times, Stenson’s consecutive birdies at the 16th and 17th holes, highlighted by a remarkable 8-iron to the par 3-16th to set up a conceded birdie, helped the big hitting Swede claim the win. In fact, Stenson birdied four of his last nine holes to turn a 2-down deficit into a 2-and-1 victory. Relying on the
power of the explosive Z-UR prototype and precision of the I-506 irons, Stenson routinely blasted tee shots over 300 yards, and hit over 85% of his greens in regulation for the week. Since switching to Srixon at the Nedbank
Challenge in November 2006, Stenson has never been out of the top 10 and has
two second place finishes to go with his victories at the WGC and Dubai Desert Classic. Srixon is currently the only golf ball manufacturer to have two players among the World’s Top-5 – Jim Furyk (2nd) and Stenson (5th).
