(HERSHEY, PA) — Jim Reed, PGA Class A golf professional, has been named Director of Golf at Hershey’s Spring Creek Golf Course. In this newly created position, Reed will focus on the creation of junior golf initiatives and education programs for students of Milton Hershey School, children from the community and resort guests.

Originally called the "Juvenile Golf Club," Spring Creek was the first course in the United States open to boys and girls under age 18. Scottish golf course architect Maurice McCarthy helped Milton Hershey design the original nine-hole course on the side, while working on the famed West Course at Hershey Country Club. Golf was offered to youngsters for a green fee of 35 cents for 9 holes. In 1969, the name was changed to highlight Spring Creek, which is the water hazard that still runs through the golf course and repeatedly confronts players. The course was renovated and re-opened in 2006.

Reed’s history with golf in Hershey is extensive having served two stints as director of golf for Hershey Country Club (1989 -1996 and 2004-2006) and as tournament director from 1996-2004 of the Nationwide Tour event held on Hershey Country Club’s East Course for seven years.

The former director of golf for Iron Valley Golf Club in Cornwall, Pa., Reed is the recipient of several awards, including the Golf Industry Golf Business Professional of the Year, Philadelphia PGA Resort Merchandiser of the Year and Harrisburg District Golf Association Man of the Year.

Spring Creek is only part of the Hershey golf experience, which is highlighted by 36 holes of distinctive golf on the East and West courses of Hershey Country Club. Nearby, The Hotel Hershey and Hershey Lodge offer 900 guest rooms, more than 120,000 square feet of meeting space and The Spa At The Hotel Hershey.

Hershey, Pennsylvania, is known the world over as The Sweetest Place On Earth. The destination’s wide array of attractions include Hersheypark, ZooAmerica, Hershey Highmeadow Campground, Hershey Country Club, Hersheypark Stadium, Hersheypark Arena, Hershey Bears professional hockey team and Giant Center. Hershey is located in Central Pennsylvania, three hours from New York City, two hours from Philadelphia, and 90 minutes from the Washington/Baltimore metro area.
