MADISON, WI – The inaugural UCF Challenge, hosted by the University of Central Florida, had something not often seen at major college tournaments – electronic distance measurement. Each player at the UCF Challenge was given the opportunity to utilize the QuickShot rangefinder during their round. Though handheld rangefinders have been around for quite some time, they haven’t been allowed into a top collegiate competition until now, and the results were outstanding. The System received excellent reviews from players and coaches, and it was credited with shortening each round by 30 minutes.
"I was very impressed with the lasers," said Emilee Klein, the University of Central Florida’s head women’s golf coach. "We originally felt daylight was going to be an issue but with the speed of play, we finished well before we ever expected. I think we played faster due to the fact that the girls were not searching for numbers but instead were walking directly to their ball, shooting the pin, and then hitting their shot."
The tournament was held March 5-6, and featured eight of the country’s top 25 women’s teams, including defending national champion Duke and current number one ranked Georgia. As added incentive, the individual medalist for the event received an exemption to play in the LPGA’s Sybase Classic in May. Amanda Blumenherst of Duke took home medalist honors. It’s the first time a winner of a collegiate event has been offered a sponsor’s exemption to a LPGA Tour event.
"We are proud to have been a part of the inaugural UCF Challenge, and we’re so excited to hear the overwhelmingly positive comments from the players and coaches," said Dan Steiner, vice president of Laser Link Golf. "The Laser Link Distance System truly is the fastest, easiest, and simplest way to find distance to the flagstick. When you’re trying to speed up play, fast, easy, and simple are what you need."
