Weekley, Lincicome, Brier Lead Titleist Golf Ball Players to 5-Win Week.
When it comes to the ball of choice at the highest levels of competitive golf, the world is a very small place. That’s because across the globe, the overwhelming majority of players trust Titleist above all others. This week was no exception as Titleist continued its winning momentum. Boo Weekley secured his first career PGA Tour victory in dramatic fashion with a one-shot win at the Verizon Heritage. Brittany Lincicome posted her own one-shot victory at the Ginn Open on the LPGA Tour. In China, Markus Brier earned his second career PGA European Tour crown. With additional victories in Canada and Japan, Titleist’s five-win week advances its 2007 worldwide golf ball victory total to 44, compared with just 6 for the nearest competitor.
PGA TOUR NOTES: Boo Weekley chipped in on the final two holes to complete the weather-delayed final round of the Verizon Heritage at 3-under 68 en route to a 14-under 270 total. Titleist ambassador Stephen Leaney (New Pro V1x) finished solo 3rd two strokes back after matching Weekley’s final round 68. Kevin Na (New Pro V1x) and Vaughn Taylor (New Pro V1) tied for 4th, and Titleist ambassador and Masters champion Zach Johnson (New Pro V1x) finished solo 6th, as Titleist golf ball players occupied five of the top six positions on the leaderboard.
The final round of the Verizon Heritage was suspended until Monday after Harbour Town was hit by high winds and golf balls would not remain in place on the 16th, 17th and 18th holes, which are exposed to Calibogue Sound. The course was deemed unplayable and dangerous for both players and spectators by tournament officials just as the leaders finished hitting their approach shots into the first green.
Titleist was the golf ball of choice at the Verizon Heritage with 102 (77%) players relying upon the Pro V1 or Pro V1x, more than 11 times the nearest competitor with 9. The win is the 10th by Titleist golf ball players on the 2007 PGA Tour, five times the nearest competitor with 2.
Nearly half of the sand, lob and approach wedges in play were Vokey Design branded. A total of 132 (48%) Vokey Design wedges were in play, compared to 58 for the nearest competitor. The field also made Scotty Cameron the most played putter with 49, nearly twice the nearest competitor with 25.
Titleist was second in the iron (28), driver (30) and fairway metals (39) categories.
PGA EUROPEAN: New Pro V1 player Markus Brier earned his second career PGA European Tour crown with a five-stroke victory at the Volvo China Open in Shanghai. Brier, who led by one shot entering the final round, birdied two of his first three holes and never looked back, closing with a 4-under 67 for a winning 10-under total of 274.
Pro V1x players Andrew McLardy and Graeme McDowell were among three players who finished joint second in the event co-sanctioned by the PGA European Tour, Asian Tour and China Golf Association.
Titleist was the preferred golf ball of choice at the event with 115 (74%) players, nearly nine times the nearest competitor with 13. The win is the 12th by Titleist golf ball players on the 2007 PGA European Tour, four times the nearest competitor with 3.
LPGA: On a day when only one player broke par, New Pro V1x player Brittany Lincicome endured weather delays and howling winds to win the Ginn Open by one shot. It marked the second career victory for Lincicome, who began the final round four shots off the lead and was six back with 10 to play. Lincicome started and ended the day at 10-under par after shooting an even-par 72 to finish at 278.
Titleist was the most played golf ball at the event with 108 (75%) players, more than four times the nearest competitor with 23. The win is the third by Titleist golf ball players on the 2007 LPGA Tour. The champion also trusted Vokey Design Spin Milled sand, lob and approach wedges and a Scotty Cameron Futura Mallet for her success.
JAPAN: Yui Ueda captured the season-opening Token Homemate Cup for his first career victory, edging fellow New Pro V1x and full-line Titleist equipment player Dong-Hwan Lee by one shot. New Pro V1x player Steven Conran tied for third. Ueda closed with a level par 71 to finish at 8-under 276. Titleist was the preferred golf ball of choice at the event with 49 players, more than twice the nearest competitor.
CANADA: Rookie Adam Bland (New Pro V1x) won the season-opening San Jose International Open on the first hole of a four-way playoff.
WORLDWIDE WINS: With five more wins this week, Titleist golf ball players have accumulated 44 victories across the 2007 worldwide professional tours, more than seven times the nearest competitor with 6, and more than all other golf balls combined.
