First Tour Victory for TaylorMade’s New Burner Driver; Third Nationwide Win in Four Weeks for TaylorMade-adidas Golf
CARLSBAD, Calif. (May 7, 2007) – TaylorMade-adidas Tour Staff professional Jay Williamson strung together an impressive 53 consecutive holes without a bogey and closed with a 7-under 63 on Sunday en route to his first career Nationwide Tour victory at the Fort Smith Classic presented by Stephens Inc.
Williamson, who earned $94,500 with the victory, posted rounds of 69-66-66-63 for a 16-under 264 total.
"This means a ton," said Williamson. "Seeing your name on top of the leader board is always a nice thingâ?¦Obviously winning is a tremendous boost to my career."
The victory also represented the first Tour win for the Burner® driver, which was key to Williamson hitting 12 of 13 fairways in the final round.
TaylorMade’s new Burner driver is engineered to promote greater distance through faster speed. Burner employs "SuperFast Technology" to make the club lighter and faster. That includes an extra-light, 42-gram grip that’s eight grams lighter than normal and a long and light TaylorMade SuperFast RE*AX® shaft that weighs just 50 grams, and which stretches the length of the club to 46 inches. The club’s total weight tops out at 299 grams, which is approximately 20 grams less than a typical driver measuring 45 inches and equipped with a 60- to 65-gram shaft. Meanwhile the longer length expands the swing arc. Combine the lighter weight with the wider arc and you get a significant boost in distance.
Also in Williamson’s bag: TaylorMade 3-wood, TaylorMade Rescue® club (17°), TaylorMade racâ?¢ TP forged irons (3-PW), TaylorMade rac TP 56° and 60° wedges and Rossa® Daytona putter. He played the TaylorMade TP Redâ?¢ ball and wore adidas Golf’s new TOUR360 II footwear.*
TaylorMade was the No. 1 driver at the Fort Smith Classic as well as the No. 1 in total metalwoods. In total, the Burner was played by 19 different players in the field.*
The win was the third in four weeks for TaylorMade-adidas Tour Staff professionals on the Nationwide Tour. John Kimbell began the streak in mid-April with a win at the South Georgia Classic followed by a wire-to-wire victory at the Athens Regional Foundation Classic by Martin Laird on April 22.
