Along with the more "traditional" drivers released this year, a growing number of companies have added models that are pushing the last component of driver-head design to the limit—shape. Square, triangular, stretched are some of the terms used to describe the distinctly different geometry of these newly released high-MOI drivers.
The advantage of high-MOI technology is achieved by moving the mass of the clubhead to the sides, down and back—away from the face. This movement of weight can have the effect of greatly reducing the twisting action of the head upon contact usually caused by off-center hits. This is referred to as increasing the club’s Moment of Inertia, or MOI.
The greatest benefit of high-MOI drivers will be realized by average golfers whose swing generally produces less than perfect contact. Rather than badly pushed or pulled tee shots consistently landing in the rough with conventional drivers, these new high-MOI clubs can produce consistently straighter shots, which means more fairways hit/round. For a detailed analysis of each company’s approach to the high-MOI design solution, see Scott Kramer’s article starting on page 60.
"Golf equipment seems to be paralleling snow skiing in the area of R&D. Much like ‘shape skis’ have done to improve the skier’s ability to turn with more consistent control, so too are the new geometries of high MOI drivers helping the golfer to achieve more consistent control off the tee." observes Dave Brennan, Publisher of Golf Tips Media Group, former technical advisor to the US Ski Team and veteran ski manufacturing executive.
