BLUE BELL, Pa. — (June 19, 2007) – What all started as a casual conversation blossomed into a united effort by the members of a private country club, and a sincere show of gratitude to members of the United States Armed Forces.
Meadowlands Country Club members turned out en force on Monday, June 18 to host returning veterans from service in Iraq and Afghanistan at Armed Forces Appreciation Day. The event was coordinated through the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Willow Grove.
Alan Gelman, president of Meadowlands CC, called the joint effort with local businesses "a proud day for the members of Meadowlands" but was quick to add, "we are humbled and at the same time honored to host these great men and women who are willing to sacrifice all in defense of our country."
The event got its start when Rich Ochroch, a Philadelphia attorney and a board member at Meadowlands Country Club, was watching a newscast that contained coverage of the war in Iraq.
"Those kids deserve a hero’s welcome when they come home,’ said Ochroch. "Not like what happened after Vietnam. We should do something. We should do something at Meadowlands."
With those few words, the idea was hatched. When presented to the rest of the Meadowlands board, there was overwhelming approval. Co-chairmen Gilbert Benjamin and Tricia Blackman then ran with the idea and support started pouring in from the rest of the Meadowlands members and the surrounding community.
"It has been unbelievable to see this idea grow into a solid movement," said Benjamin, who coordinated the small army of volunteers and sponsors who stood behind Armed Forces Appreciation Day. "There is a great sense of pride among our members to be afforded the privilege of hosting these great men and women who serve our country and protect our freedoms."
The day included turning over the golf course to more than 80 players, returning vets from action in Iraq and Afghanistan. Meadowlands members served as forecaddies for each of the foursomes playing golf.
"I have never felt so good about volunteering to do something," said Meadowlands member Mike Keitz, who hustled to perform all of the caddie duties in professional fashion. "I spent an entire day with four real live heroes. We owe them all a huge debt of gratitude."
Also, the pool was made available to the families of those playing golf. A festive barbecue lunch was served to all guests and a number of local dignitaries were on hand to join in the salute.
Local businesses donated items and services for gift bags for all participants and prizes for those playing golf.
The day may have been summed up by Montgomery County Sheriff John Durante, who presented a proclamation on behalf of Montgomery County, then said, "This is not one of those feel-good events. This is not something made up. This is real. This is real people, coming together to honor real heroes. This is something everyone should be proud of."
