The Hermitage Hosts Final Rounds of the Largest U.S. Amateur Women’s Golf Competition
PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL, August 29, 2007 – The final rounds for the EWGA Championship, the largest amateur women’s golf competition in the United States, will be held at the Hermitage Golf Course in Old Hickory, Tennessee on September 7 – 8, 2007. Now in its 12th year, this annual competition had 2447 participants in 2007.
Competition began in April at local chapters of the Executive Women’s Golf Association (EWGA). From April through July, depending on the area’s golf season, local competitions were held by over 100 EWGA chapters found throughout the United States and Canada.
At the chapter level, EWGA members competed in individual stroke play in five flights based on USGA handicaps and a scramble team competition. Low gross and low net winners in each flight and the winning scramble team then competed in one of 15 semi-final competitions held throughout the United States. Semi-final winners and those who won at the finals in 2006 will compete in the 36-hole championship finals. More than 1200 women golfers played in the semi-finals with a total of 223 competitors to play in the final rounds.
"The EWGA Championship is a premier event for women of all playing ability levels. For some of our members who did not grow up playing sports, this is one of their first experiences in competitive play," says Pam Swensen, CEO of the EWGA. "The growth and continued excellence of the EWGA Championship demonstrates our ongoing commitment to providing women with more opportunities through the game of golf."
Previously hosting the EWGA Championship Finals in 2004, the Hermitage Golf Course is considered one of Tennessee’s finest public access golf courses. Its two courses have received numerous awards including "Top 10 in Tennessee" from Golf Digest Magazine and Golf for Women’s "50 Best Courses for Women" and are a certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary.
"The diversity of the field reflects the varied composition of women who belong to the EWGA," says Swensen. "There are nurses and doctors, teachers and principals, police officers and lawyers, retirees and all sorts of business women and entrepreneurs, all coming together for an exciting two-day final competition in Tennessee."
Since the EWGA started in 1991, more than 85,000 women have benefited from membership in the organization which is dedicated to providing opportunities to learn, play, and enjoy the game of golf for business and for life. Chapters provide a wide range of golf, social and networking activities for both new and experienced golfers.
The EWGA is headquartered in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. For more information about the association and its membership, visit www.ewga.com
