Matthew Cryer, the newly-crowned British Mid-Amateur champion, will be in action among a field of leading players when the English Champion Club Tournament is played at Hesketh Golf Club, Lancashire, on 14th – 15th September.
Cryer, whose victory at Alwoodley came as a consolation following his defeat in the English Amateur Championship final at Royal St George’s, will be back in England colours later this month in the Home Internationals in Ireland. He heads the Coventry squad at Hesketh against the champion clubs from the other counties in what promises to be a two-day feast of golf.
The field also includes several boy and under 16 internationals as well as a string of tournament winners and county champions.
Boy cap Billy Fowles is included in a strong Wentworth team than also includes Warren Harmston, while Adam Myers, an under 16 cap for the past three years, his brother Andrew and Adam Print form the Northants County line-up.
Martin Young, the 2006 English Mid-Amateur Champion, is part of the Brokenhurst Manor team representing Hampshire while the Gloucestershire County Champion Oliver Glaze and under 16 cap Chris Lloyd are in the Kendleshire side.
Jason Palmer, winner of the 2006 Italian Amateur Championship, forms part of the Kirby Muxloe team from Leicestershire, Miles Mackman, winner of the Lagonda Trophy and a member of the England under 21 squad, is in the Broome Manor side from Wiltshire, while veteran Roger Smithies will be representing Manchester Golf Club.
Workington, the Cumbrian Champions, include William Bowe, a former England under 16 and youth international and winner of the Formby Hare this year, while the experienced Richard Aisbitt and Michael Curry are in the Brancepeth Castle squad from Durham.
Hawkstone Park, Shropshire & Herefordshire’s Champions for the second successive year, will rely on youth in the shape of Billy Mills and Ricky Pharo and experience with Nigel Chesters, father of under 16 cap Ashley Chesters and joint winner of the Logan Trophy in 2005.
Perhaps the youngest line-up in the event will be Suffolk champions Stoke by Nayland with juniors Owen Pearl, Michael Swan and Liam Brace, a member of the England under 18 squad.
There are three previous winners competing this time, Porters Park from Hertfordshire, who won the title in 1985, the second occasion it was played, Brokenhurst Manor (1988) and Coxmoor (2000).
The Champion Club Tournament is decided on aggregate over 36 holes of stroke play with all three cards to count each day.
