Goal is to see golfers get help by getting fitted for proper clubs
THE INTERNET (January 1st, 2008) – Stop Club Abuse formally launched activities today, designed to wake the golf community up to widespread abuse of equipment by frustrated golfers.
“It’s sad to think that at this moment, on a tee, fairway or green, that a golf club abuser is preparing for a shot that may not go his way. And, when it doesn’t, the club in his hand is going to feel the full brunt of that frustration,” said Jonah Hughes, Stop Club Abuse founding member. “Maybe the club will get beat senselessly into the grass, or whipped against a tree, or thrown mercilessly into the nearest water hazard. A lot of times the club simply gets put back into the dark confines of the bag, never to see the light of day again.”
Stop Club Abuse positions itself as an action-oriented initiative that’s a combination of Greenpeace, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and Scruff the Crime Dog.
“Our goal is simple: help the world to see that the abuse is happening. And put an end to it. We’ll do whatever we have to do to create some noise around this issue. Even if that means taking perps down when we catch them in the act.”
Stop Club Abuse doesn’t have police powers, Hughes admits, but it does have an iron will. “The sad fact is: abusers are everywhere. On every golf course. In every clubhouse. And because neglect is often the severest form of abuse, you might never see the abuse. But it’s out there.”
Garages are often the most notorious dumping ground for abused clubs. “Many of these clubs are in near brand-new condition. A lot of times, golfers buy a new club thinking it’s the answer to their game only to find out on the course that it hasn’t helped a bit. And that’s usually the end of the beginning and the beginning of the end.”
Hughes suggests that abusers get help for their problem. Getting fitted for clubs properly can ensure golfers that their playing with the right equipment for their game. And a proper fitting by an experienced club fitter has shown to dramatically cut down on abuse. Not to mention penalty strokes.
