HONOLULU, Hawaii — SuperStroke™ Putter Grip user KJ Choi completed an impressive wire-to-wire run at the Sony Open on Sunday, capping the week with a birdie putt on the 72nd hole for a three-stroke winning margin and the $954,000 first-place check. For the tournament, Choi finished at 14 under par and led after every round.
The win, Choi’s seventh on the PGA Tour, gives him at least one Tour title for the fourth consecutive year, the same as Phil Mickelson. Only two players, Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh, have longer consecutive-year winning streaks. With the Sony victory, Choi also leads in FedEx Cup points for the young 2008 season.
In Sunday’s final round, the field battled up to 30-mile-per-hour winds on the Waialae Country Club course, making short-game success a priority. For his part, Choi needed to hole 14-foot par putts on both the first and second holes, and an 8-foot putt for a bogey on No. 4, to keep the rest of the field in his rearview mirror.
“It was very difficult conditions out there,” Choi said. “Every shot was difficult because you never knew where the ball would go. I think the biggest thing I learned this week is no matter what the conditions are, you have to be patient with yourself.”
In an interview after the second round, Choi credited the SuperStroke grip as being instrumental in his consistent putting. “It helps me to have my arms closely fit to my body,” he said, “and it takes the wrist action out so every putt feels more comfortable.”
