Pellucid reports that February’s weather posted a 28% increase in Golf Playable Hours (GPH) for the month compared to the same period last year. This positive month offset a 19% decline in GPH recorded in January and lifted the year-to-date (YTD) GPH into positive territory at +3% vs. the same period in 2007.
Entering the new year, Pellucid has refined their industry-leading weather impact services increasing regional coverage from 24 to 45 regions working in conjunction with weather information provider WeatherBank. Through February, 34 of the 45 regions are registering Golf Playable Hours as defined by Pellucid with 18 up and 15 down or a positive:negative breadth ratio of 1:1 (one region in neutral territory or +/-2% vs. YA). It’s important to note that in the ”cold season” there are large fluctuations in percent change due to low base sizes for the GPH measure but the national results are weighted by rounds contribution percent which dampens these swings. Looking back at January’s weather results vs. Golf Datatech’s recently released rounds results, the industry registered a 61% Utilization Rate for the month compared to the 2007 benchmark of 52%. This means that, although rounds were down in January compared to year ago, they weren’t down as much as the decline in weather.
Pellucid President Jim Koppenhaver comments on the methodology improvements and current results saying, ”The folks at WeatherBank continue to help us refine the challenging process of accurately tracking weather and its impact on golf from individual facility to national level. The new 45 weather regions make the Regional Weather Impact Tracking report more actionable (i.e. we now have 3 Texas regions vs. 1 previously for the entire state) and more accurate at both regional and national level. Through the first two months we’re basically even with 2007 on weather so the February rounds results will be telling to see if we can move that measure into positive territory early in the year.”
More detail on the results from national to individual facility level can be obtained through combinations of Pellucid’s Weather Impact Analyses: The Regional Weather Impact Tracking report, the Facility 10-year Weather Impact Trend report, the Facility Annual Weather Impact Analysis and the Facility Monthly Weather Impact Tracking report.
