SUGAR GROVE, Illinois (March 17, 2008) – Black Sheep Golf Club is proud welcome local-golfer-made-good Kevin Streelman as the club’s official staff touring professional.
A native of Winfield, Illinois – a western suburb of Chicago not far from Black Sheep – Streelman has friends among the club staff and its members. Over the last few years, the Wheaton-Warrenville South graduate would practice and play at the renowned 27-hole facility while in the Chicago area during breaks in his mini-tour schedule.
The 29-year-old Duke University graduate even carried a golf bag embroidered with a Black Sheep logo while competing at last year’s PGA Tour Qualifying School tournament, where he earned full Tour playing privileges for the first time.
“We are honored to have an association with a young man like Kevin Streelman,” said Black Sheep founder and president Vincent Solano. “Not only is he a good guy, he has worked hard and is a very good player. The members and staff at Black Sheep are proud of him and wish him well on the PGA Tour.”
The highlight of Streelman’s season, so far, had to be his playing in the final group with World No. 1 Tiger Woods in the third round of the Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines. At the time, the 29-year-old Streelman was World No. 1,354. Woods wound up winning the tournament but Streelman, who got into the tournament as an alternate, finished a respectable 29th.
“I like everything about Black Sheep – the 27 holes, the great practice areas, and, of course, the people,” Streelman said. “It’s a fun place where they really love golf.”
Streelman has earned $102,250 this year and stands 128th on the PGA Tour money list. If he is in the top 125 – or if he wins a tournament – by the end of the season, he will have earned the right to play the Tour next season.
Founded in 2002, Black Sheep Golf Club recently was named to Golfweek’s Best 100 Modern Courses ranking for the fourth consecutive year.
A private men-only club, with a national membership Black Sheep represents golf in its purest state. Located on a 285-acre former farmstead, it has a 6,200-square-foot, white barn-style clubhouse where most of the space is devoted to a sizeable and well-appointed locker room and a great room/bar with a small pro shop. The club has no real estate development, no swimming pool, no social calendar, and no kitchen. Just golf.
Located west of downtown Chicago near the intersection of Interstate 88 and Illinois Route 47, Black Sheep was designed by David Esler of St. Charles, Ill. in the spirit of such classic inland links as Chicago Golf Club, Shinnecock Hills, Prairie Dunes and Sand Hills.
