(Hershey, PA) – A gifted and successful teacher with international experience, Andrew Dawes is joining the Hershey Golf Collection as director of instruction. A certified member of the British PGA, Dawes will oversee all aspects of the teaching programs at Hershey, including golf schools and clinics at three Hershey Golf Collection facilities.
“I enjoy seeing the fun that people get from golf, and I enjoy being part of the community,” said Dawes, who comes to Hershey after directing the Golf Digest Schools at The Greenbrier in West Virginia. “It’s almost like being a family doctor, with the ability to affect people and see what they get out of golf being part of their lives.”
Dawes has participated in the “Big Break” series on The Golf Channel in a golf instructional role and has produced a series of golf tips for the CNN Airport Network. He has appeared several times in Golf Digest, which included a special instructional series in 2004.
Born in Northern California and raised in England, Dawes was introduced to golf at age 4 and not only played the game, but also worked at golf courses. He progressed through the Junior Golf Foundation of England and turned pro at 19, right out of high school. Returning to the United States to compete in 2000, Dawes played various mini-tours and taught at golf schools in Arizona, California and Nevada.
After a few years of spending winters in the U.S. and summers in England, Dawes settled on teaching full-time. In 2002 he became the director of instruction for Golf Digest Schools at Mirasol Country Club and PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., before moving on to the Greenbrier in 2004. Most recently he also has spent time as director of instruction at Adios Golf Club in Florida.
Dawes has earned numerous honors, which include being named one of the “Top 20 Instructors Under Age 40” by Golf Digest. He has successfully taught various types of golfers, from children to professional football players.
“My main approach to teaching is to improve and perfect the techniques golfers already have and make them more effective, rather than starting from scratch and reinventing the wheel,” Dawes says. “I’m looking forward to the new program at Hershey with great enthusiasm.”
Consistently ranked among the top golf resorts in the United States, the Hershey Golf Collection offers four distinctly different styles and challenges of golf for all to play. The historic Hershey Country Club, with its famed East and West courses, carries on the tradition and prestige of championship golf that is at the heart of the Hershey Resorts golf experience. Hershey Links (formerly Wren Dale Golf Club) is the newest addition to the Collection, and is a par-72 course with a complete practice facility – including a short-game practice area with bunkers, driving range and putting green. Dawes will conduct the majority of his instruction at Hershey Links. The fourth course in the collection is Spring Creek Golf Course, a family-friendly, nine-hole layout completely renovated in 2006.
Play on the East Course and West Course is limited to resort guests and Hershey Country Club members. The general public has access to the Hershey Links and Spring Creek courses.
