CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Assistant golf professionals Barry Wilkins and Greg Ward have been added to the staff at Olde Sycamore Golf Plantation.
Wilkins came to Olde Sycamore after seven years at Ballantyne Resort in Charlotte, while Ward made the switch from retail at Carolina Custom Golf in Charlotte.
“Barry and Greg bring two distinct backgrounds to our club and give us a staff that can cover all the bases,” said general manager Ted Staats. “They work well with our head professional, Ryan Brickley, and are very customer-service oriented.”
Both Wilkins and Ward are in the PGA apprentice program and working toward earning their Class A PGA status.
Wilkins began his golf career at Ballantyne Resort in 2001 and was promoted to assistant golf professional four years ago. He is a graduate of Sumter High School in South Carolina and has a degree in business management from Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte.
“I wanted to move to a semi-private facility after working at a public facility the last seven years,” said Wilkins. “At Olde Sycamore, I get to see new faces every day, yet also have a lot of interaction with the members. It also allows me to do more teaching.”
Ward has more than a dozen years of experience in golf retail. He worked as a golf retail specialist at Belk and as a manager for Golf America stores in Raleigh and Charlotte before joining Carolina Custom Golf as a store manager six years ago.
“I had been thinking about getting into this end of the business for a couple of years and I’m really glad I made the move. I should have done it 10 years ago,” said Ward. “The staff and members at Olde Sycamore are great and it’s an ideal atmosphere to pursue my goal of becoming a Class A professional.”
