Vijay Singh Secures FedEx Cup Playing Pro V1x
Fairhaven, MA (September 29, 2008) – It was another memorable Sunday across the worldwide professional tours for Titleist golf ball loyalists. At the TOUR Championship, Camilo Villegas trusted the Pro V1 to rally from a five-shot deficit to a dramatic sudden death victory. It marked Camilo’s second consecutive PGA TOUR win following his victory at the BMW Championship three weeks ago. He was not the only winner at East Lake, as Vijay Singh officially secured the FedEx Cup. Titleist Brand Ambassador Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano made history of his own on the PGA European Tour, topping Lee Westwood in an all-Titleist golf ball playoff to win the prestigious British Masters. Two more victories this week advances the Titleist golf ball victory count across the worldwide professional tours to 135, nearly five times the nearest competitor with 28.
TITLEIST TOUR HIGHLIGHTS FOR WEEK ENDING SEPTEMBER 28, 2008
PGA TOUR: Villegas was five strokes behind the leader with 11 holes remaining in Sunday’s final round, and rallied to win the TOUR Championship with a par on the first hole of a sudden death playoff. It marked the second consecutive victory for Villegas, who won the BMW Championship three weeks ago for his first career PGA TOUR title.
– The 26-year old Villegas overcame the deficit by making six birdies over his last 11 holes to finish with a 4-under 66 for the day and 7-under 273 for the tournament.
– It was a Titleist 1-2 finish in the FedEx Cup Standings as Pro V1x player Vijay Singh edged Villegas by 551 points. Singh posted consecutive victories at The Barclays and Deutsche Bank Championship, the first two events in the Playoffs, before Villegas captured the last two in the four-event Playoffs.
– Titleist was the most played golf ball at the TOUR Championship with 16 players in the limited-field event, compared to 7 for the nearest competitor. Titleist was also the top choice in the driver (T7), wedge (20) and putter (11) categories. Titleist was second in fairway metals (9).
– The win was the 25th for Titleist players on the 2008 PGA TOUR, more than twice the nearest competitor with 11.
– In addition to relying upon the Pro V1 golf ball, the champion also played Pro V1, Vokey Design Spin Milled gap (54), sand (58) and lob (60) wedges and a Scotty Cameron Circa 62 #6 putter.
– The win with the Scotty Cameron putter was the 20th on the PGA TOUR this season, more than twice the nearest competitor with 8. It is the third consecutive PGA TOUR win for a player trusting a Scotty Cameron putter.
PGA EUROPEAN: Titleist Brand Ambassador Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño captured the Quinn Insurance British Masters at The Belfry after a thrilling all-Titleist playoff with defending champion Lee Westwood (Pro V1x). It marked a record-tying 14th playoff on the PGA European Tour this season. Fernandez-Castano, who was playing the new Titleist 909D3 driver for the first time in competition, started Sunday three shots behind Westwood. He fired a bogey-free final round 67, to match Westwood at 12-under 276, and then won with a par on the third playoff hole to earn his fourth career PGA European Tour title.
– Titleist was the most played golf ball at the British Masters with 100 players, compared to 18 for the nearest competitor. The victory was the 22nd for Titleist players on the 2008 PGA European Tour, more than four times the nearest competitor with 5.
– What’s in Fernandez-Castano’s Bag?: Pro V1 golf ball, Titleist 909D3 (8.5), 690MB irons (3-9), Vokey Design pitching (48) and sand (52) wedges, Spin Milled lob (58) wedge, Scotty Cameron Studio Select putter.
CHAMPIONS: Titleist was the most played golf ball at the SAS Championship with 53 players, compared to 13 for the nearest competitor. Titleist was also first in the wedge (44) category. Tom Kite (Pro V1) finished solo second, three shots behind the winner, while Andy Bean (Pro V1) and Gil Morgan (Pro V1x) each shot final round 5-under 67s to tie for third place at 11-under 205.
LPGA: Titleist was the most played golf ball at the Navistar LPGA Classic with 111 players, compared to 29 for the nearest competitor. The event was decided by a three-way sudden death playoff that included Pro V1 players Candie Kung and Cristie Kerr. Kerr was eliminated on the first extra hole, while Kung was closed out on the second extra hole. All three players finished at 15-under 273.
