NEW YORK, NY-For the 24th consecutive year, Golf World has published its selection of the “100 Best Golf Shops”-a collection of those private, resort, public and off-course golf shops that have excelled in retail operations. The complete feature will appear in the Feb. 2 issue of Golf World, and can be viewed online now at www.golfworld.com.
Of the 29 states represented on the list, Florida and California have the most shops (13). Arizona is second with 11. Scottsdale is the leading city with seven shops.
The PGA Tour Shop has 11 shop locations on the list, the most of any off-course facility. Other facilities with multiple shops include Edwin Watts Golf (4), Lumpy’s Golf (2) and Carl’s Golfland (2).
Haggin Oaks Golf Super Shop in Sacramento and Carl’s Golfland in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. have appeared on the list all 24 years. Eleven shops are on the list for the first time.
In 2008, the combined revenue of the 100 Best Shops was $236,730,783. This is compared to $234,098,563 in 2007, a year over year increase of 1.12%. In 1986, the first year of the list, total revenue was $61,844,880.
To be considered for the annual list, golf shops submitted entries to the magazine. The winning shops were then chosen based on three criteria, each weighted equally:
· Revenue per square foot and per round of golf played compared with shops in the same category.
· Appearance of layout and product displays (determined through photos submitted to the magazine).
· Evaluation of a shop’s successful promotions and recent initiatives within the last year (described through written response).
The “100 Best Golf Shops” list was previously featured in Golf World Business and Golf Shop Operations, both published by Golf Digest Publications. This is the third year that Golf World has published the list.
