Geoff Ogilvy and Mark Wilson Win Playing New 2009 Pro V1 and Pro V1x Golf Balls
Fairhaven (March 2, 2009) – Geoff Ogilvy continues to define himself as a competitive force among the game’s greatest players, trusting his new 2009 Pro V1 golf ball en route to topping six world-class competitors for his second WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship. He becomes the first player to win multiple times this season having captured the PGA Tour’s season-opening Mercedes-Benz Championship. Mark Wilson also showed how steady play and trust in your golf ball translates to success, as he relied on the new 2009 Pro V1x to win the Mayakoba Classic in Mexico. Two victories. Two new Pro V1 golf balls. When it comes to winning, there’s no substitute for quality, performance, and consistency. And there’s no match for Titleist.
WGC: Ogilvy won the 36-hole WGC-Accenture play final 4-and-3, trusting the new 2009 Pro V1 golf ball for his success. He took the lead with a birdie on the first hole and never trailed. Ogilvy owned a 3-up lead after the morning round, then closed out the match with a birdie on the 33rd hole. It was a relentless performance by the 31-year-old Australian, who ran his career record at the Accenture Match Play Championship to 17-2, the highest winning percentage in tournament history.
Ogilvy advances to No. 4 in the Official World Golf Rankings and will defend his title in two weeks at the WGC-CA Championship at Doral. He also relied upon Vokey Design wedges and a Scotty Cameron Newport putter for his success.
Titleist Brand Ambassador Ross Fisher (Pro V1x, 905R driver, 909F2 fairway metal, 909H hybrid, 695MB irons, Vokey Design pitching and sand wedges, Vokey Spin Milled lob wedge, Scotty Cameron Studio Select Newport 2 putter) finished fourth in his WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship debut.
Also making a notable debut at the event was Titleist Brand Ambassador Rory McIlroy (New 2009 Pro V1x, 909D2 driver, 906F2 fairway metals, ZM Forged irons, Vokey Design pitching and gap wedges, Spin Milled sand and lob wedges, Scotty Cameron Xperimental putter) who advanced through four matches before losing 2-and-1 to the eventual champion.
Titleist was the most played golf ball at the Accenture Match Play Championship with 32 players, more than three times the nearest competitor with 9.
PGA TOUR: Mark Wilson closed with a 2-under par 68 to capture the Mayakoba Golf Classic for his second career PGA TOUR title. Wilson finished at 13-under 267. Wilson’s first PGA TOUR victory came at the Honda Classic in 2007. Kevin Streelman (Pro V1x, Scotty Cameron Studio Select Newport 2 putter), whose 6-under 64 was the low final round, and Heath Slocum (Pro V1x), tied for 3rd at 10-under 270. With his fifth place finish, Titleist Brand Ambassador Kevin Na (Pro V1x, 909D3 driver, AP2 irons, Vokey Design sand wedge, Vokey Spin Milled lob wedge, Scotty Cameron Studio Select Newport putter) posted his third top-5 finish of the 2009 season.
Fellow Titleist Brand Ambassadors and 2008 Nationwide Tour graduates Aron Price (New 2009 Titleist Pro V1x, 909D3 driver, 906F2 fairway metal, 695CB irons, Vokey Design wedges) and Jarrod Lyle (New 2009 Titleist Pro V1x, 909D3 driver, 909F2 fairway metal, AP2 3-5 irons, 670 6-9 irons, Vokey Design pitching and sand wedges, Spin Milled lob wedge, Scotty Cameron prototype putter) each posted their first top 10 finishes, tying for sixth place with five other players, including David Toms (New 2009 Titleist Pro V1), Jerry Kelly (New 2009 Titleist Pro V1) and Briny Baird (Pro V1).
Titleist was the most played golf ball at the Mayakoba Golf Classic with 85 players (64%), compared to 23 for the nearest competitor. Titleist was also first in iron sets (35), wedges (129) and putters (56). Titleist was second in drivers (29).
NATIONWIDE TOUR: Alistair Presnell (Pro V1x, 909H, ZM irons, Vokey Design pitching and sand wedges, Spin Milled lob wedge) birdied the final hole to edge fellow Australian and longtime Titleist Brand Ambassador Peter O’Malley (Pro V1x, 909D2 driver, 906F2 3-wood, 909H hybrid, ZB irons, Spin Milled pitching, sand and lob wedges, Scotty Cameron Newport putter) by one shot to win the Moonah Classic. Presnell closed with a 4-under 68 to finish at 9-under 279 at the event sanctioned by the Nationwide and Australasian tours, and earned full Nationwide Tour status for the rest of the season.
Presnell topped a leaderboard that included Titleist golf ball players among each of the top seven finishers. Titleist Brand Ambassador Michael Sim (New 2009 Pro V1x, 905R driver, 906F2 3-wood, AP2 irons, Vokey Design pitching, sand and lob wedges, Scotty Cameron Xperimental putter) was third, three strokes behind, followed Skip Kendall (New 2009 Pro V1), Daniel Summerhays (New 2009 Pro V1x), Terry Pilkadaris (Pro V1) and Adam Bland (Pro V1x).
WORLDWIDE WINS: Three more wins this week advances Titleist 2009 worldwide win count to 26, more than four times the nearest competitor with 6.
