Volunteers Deliver the EWGA Experience Enriching Women’s Lives Through Golf

PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL, April 20, 2009 – Volunteers are the cornerstone for the success of the EWGA (Executive Women’s Golf Association). Thousands of women dedicate untold hours to running their local chapters and supporting this international organization dedicated to enriching the lives of women through the game of golf. In recognition of their volunteer leadership, EWGA is saluting its members during National Volunteer Week, April 19 -26, 2009.

This celebratory week focuses national attention on the impact and power of volunteerism and service as an integral aspect of civic leadership. Established in 1974 by former President Richard Nixon, National Volunteer Week has grown exponentially in scope each year, drawing the support and endorsement of all subsequent U.S. presidents, governors, mayors and other respected elected officials, as well as corporate and community groups across the country.

“We are recognizing and thanking our volunteers throughout this week for their dedication, passion and service to the EWGA,” says Pam Swensen, CEO. “Volunteers are the foundation of our organization — from the 1500 volunteer leaders who run EWGA local chapters; to the thousands of others who serve as mentors, on committees and volunteer at events; the dedicated teams that run the EWGA Championship and support other EWGA initiatives; and the EWGA and EWGA Foundation Board of Directors – all giving freely of their time and talent to help others benefit through the game of golf.”

The association estimates that since is started in 1991, at least 30,000 women have served as EWGA volunteers. Fittingly, its premier competitive golf event, the EWGA Championship begins this week with the start of chapter championships on April 25. Now in its 14th year, the EWGA Championship is considered the largest amateur women’s golf competition in the country. The local championships are run by volunteers, with dozens of other volunteers conducting the 15 semi-final competitions leading to the 36-hole Championship Finals, which will take place on September 25-26 at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

The group’s volunteer spirit also is demonstrated in the myriad of charitable events and fundraising activities of EWGA chapters and the EWGA Foundation. Approximately $500,000 is raised each year for a wide range of causes including Rally for a Cure, the American Cancer Society and LPGA-USGA Girls Golf.

Since its founding in 1991, the EWGA has enriched the lives of more than 100,000 women connecting them to learn, play, and enjoy golf for business and fun. This not-for-profit association delivers a wide range of golf, social and networking activities for both new and experienced golfers at over 125 local chapters throughout the United States and international chapters in Canada and France. The EWGA is headquartered in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. For more information about the association and its membership, visit www.ewga.com
