Free Site Offers a Variety of Services to Golfers Everywhere
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Have you ever found yourself in or headed for an unfamiliar town with time on your hands? As a golf enthusiast, you’ve probably wished you could fill that spare time with a round of golf or two, but you didn’t know where to go or who to call. A new Internet service will create a solution – and more.
Scheduled to launch May 15, Golf-Nation.net is the world’s complete web-based social networking site designed specifically to connect golfers around the world. It was created to put golfers in touch with each other according to location, schedule, handicap, age and/or home course. What’s more, Golf-Nation.net will raise the golf IQ of every player who belongs to the site and all of its many services are completely free to members.
“Imagine if you will, a place where golfers of all descriptions across the globe will be welcome to share their common bond,” said Mike Purkey, a career golf journalist and founder of Golf-Nation.net. “Golf is the most social game there is and golfers like nothing better than to communicate their experience and enthusiasm. It’s what makes golf so unique among our sports. We think we have a great place, in the present environment, for golfers to gather, regardless of time or space. Anytime is the right time for golfers to be together and Golf-Nation.net is the right vehicle.”
Here are some of the features that make Golf-Nation.net unique among social networking sites:
+ Whether traveling, relocating or simply looking for a game in their own hometown, golfers, based on their profiles, will be able to search the globe for players of similar backgrounds and experience to connect with them to arrange games. No other site offers such a service.
At Golf-Nation.net, members complete a player profile that identifies them by hometown, home club, handicap and age. Members will also list the day or days of the week they regularly prefer to play. Members can then search the Golf-Nation.net membership for possible playing partners, based on any combination of profile criteria.
“Say you’re traveling to Chicago on business,” Purkey explained, “and you have some free time on Wednesday afternoon. You go to Golf-Nation.net on your computer, your cell phone or PDA and type in Chicago, Wednesday and maybe even the course you’d like to play, and see who might be available. You might even narrow it down to age or handicap range – or both. Once you’ve searched the database, you can contact other Golf-Nation.net members through the website and arrange a game.”
+ If a member is looking for a new golf club or set of clubs, he or she will have the capability of finding golfers all over the world who already have the same clubs in their bags. They can ask for and receive feedback and automatically have a retail partner from which to purchase new equipment.
+ Golf-Nation.net also will provide a travel service through which members can book golf getaways anywhere in the world. Members will simply complete a brief form and the trip, including lodging and starting times, will be arranged without the member having to even pick up the phone. And again, the service is completely free to members.
Either individually or as a group, members can have all their arrangements made by experienced golf travel professionals by simply completing an online form that identifies destination, preferred dates and other pertinent information. Members can select the courses they would like to play and even their level of accommodations, from economy to luxury, all with just a click.
+ Members will have the opportunity to blog and respond to blogs about every golf topic imaginable. The ability to share opinions with others in a members’ forum will create an opportunity to open lines of communication in a unique way.
+ With regularly updated editorial content, members will be kept abreast of the latest golf equipment and will read reviews of great golf destinations – from the most popular resorts to hidden gems. In addition, in content unique to Golf-Nation.net, members will be exposed to the game’s etiquette and will read a regular column that addresses the Rules of Golf. Finally, opinion pieces from award-winning writers will be certain conversation starters whether its in grillrooms or at Golf-Nation’s own blogspot.
A veteran of more than 25 years as a golf journalist, Purkey is a former senior editor of one of golf’s largest national magazines and a past president of the Golf Writers Association of America. He has co-authored two books, including Playing A Round With The Little Pro with renowned teaching pro Eddie Merrins. He has won two national writing awards presented by the GWAA and three from the International Network of Golf. He also has collaborated with a number of touring pros and golf experts on countless magazine features and columns.
“We all know that regardless of where we play, golfers are all members of one big club,” Purkey said. “Why not have an online clubhouse where we can all meet and do the same things we do every time we sit down in the 19th hole with our buddies – arrange our next games, talk equipment and put together golf outings with our friends.”
Membership in Golf-Nation.net is free to all golfers. Golf-Nation.net will not include home addresses in its member profiles so members can be certain that their information will never be sold or given to marketing firms for any reason. And because members will contact other members through the site, their personal e-mail addresses will not be available to others online.
To become a Golf-Nation.net member, simply go to the website and complete your player profile. You will immediately be eligible to use all the services available at the site and connect with golfers everywhere.
“As golfers, we are all part of the best fraternity in the world. We all share a love for golf that makes it easy for us to make friends within the game. When we meet someone who plays golf, we immediately start talking about the same things – where we play, what we play, how well we play or at least how well we’d like to play,” said Purkey. “With Golf-Nation.net, we’re simply providing an online grillroom for those types of conversations.
“Like any club, we will be starting with only a handful of members who come together to form Golf-Nation. But with more than 13 million golfers in the U.S. alone, we anticipate Golf-Nation growing rapidly over the next few months. As it grows, it will only get better for our members, who will have a chance to connect with more and more golfers around the world.”
