Far Hills, N.J. (June 17) – The USGA Museum and Arnold Palmer Center for Golf History has announced the launch of the Tiger Woods Championship Scrapbook, an online exhibit highlighting each of Woods’ record-tying nine USGA championship victories, at www.usgamuseum.com/tigerwoods.
With his dramatic playoff win at the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines, Woods drew even with legendary amateur Bob Jones for the most USGA championship victories. Woods captured his first national title in 1991, when he won the first of three consecutive U.S. Junior Amateur Championships. He then claimed three U.S. Amateurs in a row, from 1994 to 1996. In 2000, he won his first U.S. Open by a record 15 strokes at Pebble Beach (Calif.) Golf Links, and he earned a second U.S. Open in 2002 at Bethpage State Park’s Black Course. Woods will defend his title and attempt to break the tie with Jones at the 2009 U.S. Open, which begins June 18 at Bethpage State Park’s Black Course in Farmingdale, N.Y.
The online exhibit features videos, photographs and artifacts from the USGA Museum’s collection that tell the story of Tiger Woods’ development as a national champion. Home to the world’s premier collection of golf memorabilia, the USGA Museum contains a treasure trove of artifacts, including scorecards, championship programs and video highlights from Woods’ nine USGA victories.
“The USGA wanted to acknowledge Tiger’s career in a way only the Museum can, given its vast resources and archival materials,” said Rand Jerris, director of Communications and the USGA Museum. “The Tiger Woods Championship Scrapbook is the USGA Museum’s attempt to create what Tiger’s personal USGA scrapbook might look like.”
The Museum has an extensive collection of golf scrapbooks, some dating back to the 19th century; the Tiger Woods Championship Scrapbook gives the Museum an opportunity to share the history it has collected in a more contemporary way.
