EWGA Foundation Tournament Includes Silent Action, Used Golf Club Collection & More
PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla., June 22, 2009 – Four lucky golfers will be teeing it up with former LPGA tour player Renee Powell during the 7th annual EWGA at the U.S. Women’s Open charity golf tournament at the Riverview Country Club in Easton, PA. on Friday, July 10. Hosted by the EWGA (Executive Women’s Golf Association) Foundation, this annual fundraising event is held in conjunction with the U.S. Women’s Open Championship which takes place at the nearby Sauçon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem on July 9 -12.
Attracting EWGA members and other supporters of girls golf from throughout the country, the event also is open to the public. Proceeds will benefit the LPGA-USGA Girls Golf program and used golf clubs will be collected for the EWGA Foundation’s Drive for Dreams program.
The event includes a 12:30 pm shotgun four-person team tournament (shamble format) with box lunch, awards banquet, silent auction and gift bag. The full day price is $165 per person and cost for the banquet and silent auction only is $75 per person. Registration is available online at www.ewga.com or contact Nancy Matus at 561-691-0096 ext. 14.
Powell, one of only three African-American women to play on the LPGA tour, was named 2003 First Lady of Golf by the PGA of America. She is head professional at Clearview Golf Club in East Canton, Ohio and considered one of America’s top teachers. Clearview, on the National Register of Historic Places, was built by her father in 1948 and remains the only African-American owned and operated golf facility in the country. Powell’s girl’s golf program for underprivileged girls is the 2009 recipient of the Drive for Dreams campaign that turns unwanted golf clubs into cash donations based on their fair market trade-in values. The EWGA Foundation is working with the PGA of America and its PGA Trade-in Network to facilitate the process.
“We are holding a special advance auction to win the playing spots with Renee during the tournament. It’s a priceless opportunity,” says Margaret Downey, the president of the EWGA Foundation. “We hope everyone who supports girls golf will join us for an exciting day of golf and fundraising for our future generation.”
Sponsors include Irish Links Tours & Travel, Titleist, Yuengling, Top-Sales-Jobs.com, Facilitation by Design and Penn Center for Executive Health. Sponsorship opportunities are still available and in-kind donations for auction and drawing prizes are also welcome. Proceeds raised from this EWGA Foundation event will support LPGA-USGA Girls Golf (Girls Golf). Over the past six years, the EWGA Foundation, through EWGA chapters and association-wide fundraising efforts, has raised nearly $400,000 in support of Girls Golf, one of the EWGA Foundation’s designated charities. The EWGA Foundation also provides EWGA members who serve as mentors and volunteer in various capacities at more than 40 Girls Golf sites, making the EWGA one of the largest single contributors to the Girls Golf program aside from the USGA.
Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2009, LPGA-USGA Girls Golf was formed to connect girls, ages 7 to 17, to the game of golf. A developmental junior golf program and the only national initiative of its kind, Girls Golf presents an opportunity for girls to make lasting friendships, gain self-confidence, learn to compete and have fun, while fostering a lifetime of enjoyment for the game.
Girls Golf, with nearly 200 sites around the country and more that 60,000 participants since its inception in 1989, is administered through a partnership between The Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Foundation and the United States Golf Association (USGA), both 501(c)(3) charitable organizations.
The EWGA Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit organization, a separate legal entity formed and supported by the Executive Women’s Golf Association. Its mission is to create and fund education and leadership programs for women of all ages. In addition to its fundraising support of LPGA-USGA Girls Golf, EWGA Foundation initiatives also include: financial support for the development and refinement of the EWGA Golf Education curriculum; financial support to bring speakers with expertise in leadership development training and facilitation to EWGA meetings and gatherings; Drive for Dreams outreach program to ‘give the gift of golf’ and the Women On Par® scholarship program.
