Fairhaven, MA (June 29, 2009) – Kenny Perry, relying upon the Pro V1x golf ball, fired a final round 7-under 63 en route to setting the Travelers Championship tournament scoring record of 22-under par 258. Perry topped a leaderboard that included fellow Titleist golf ball loyalists David Toms, Paul Goydos, Ben Curtis and Hunter Mahan, all of whom finished among the top four and ties. Perry’s victory marks the 15th for Titleist players on the 2009 PGA Tour, more than three times the nearest competitor with 4. It was the 14th career victory for Perry and his second this season (he also captured the FBR Open). With the victory, he also takes the lead in FedEx Cup standings, where he is followed by Titleist Brand Ambassador Zach Johnson.
Perry finished three strokes clear of Toms and Goydos, both of whom play the Pro V1. Titleist Brand Ambassador Ben Curtis (Pro V1x, 909D2 driver, 909F2 fairway metal, 909H hybrids, AP2 irons, Vokey Design sand and lob wedges, Scotty Cameron Studio Select Newport 2 putter) and 2007 Travelers Championship winner Hunter Mahan (Pro V1) were among three players sharing fourth place.
Titleist was the most played golf ball at the Travelers Championship with 103 players, compared to 21 for the nearest competitor. Titleist was also first in iron sets (39), wedges (136) and putters (58), and second in drivers (38).
NEWEST TITLEIST BRAND AMBASSADOR: Kyle Stanley made his professional debut as Titleist’s newest Brand Ambassador, finishing in a tie for 19th following rounds of 66-67-70-66-269. The Clemson standout made an immediate impression, tying for 5th in Greens in Regulation (79.2%) and 7th in Driving Distance (299.8). He also hit 75 percent of his fairways for the week. In addition to playing the Pro V1x golf ball, Stanley relied upon the Titleist 909D3 driver (8.5), 585.H hybrid (17.0), 680 irons (3-P), Vokey Design sand (54) and lob (60) wedges and a Scotty Cameron by Titleist SC-303 GSS prototype putter. His 14th club was a King Cobra S9-1 Pro 3-wood (13.0).
LPGA: Titleist Pro V1 player Jiyai Shin earned her fifth title in 11 months with a seven-stroke victory at the Wegmans LPGA. The 21-year-old closed with a 1-under 71 to finish in a downpour at 17-under 271. Yani Tseng (Pro V1x) tied for 2nd following a final round 66, tying the day’s best score, to share second-place at 10-under. Among the three players tied for fourth were rookies Haeji Kang (Pro V1) and Stacy Lewis (Pro V1x), the former NCAA champion from Arkansas.
Shin carried a four-stroke lead into the final round and never looked back. With the first place check of $300,000, she vaulted to the top of the 2009 LPGA Tour money list. A multiple winner on the Korean tour, Shin became the first non-LPGA member to win three events when she captured the Women’s British Open last August, followed by late-season wins in the Mizuno Classic and ADT Championship. In March, she captured the HSBC Women’s Champions in Singapore for her first victory as a LPGA Tour member.
Titleist was the most played golf ball at the Wegmans LPGA with 98 players, compared to 31 for the nearest competitor. Shin’s win marks the 10th by Titleist golf ball loyalists on the 2009 LPGA Tour, five times the nearest competitor with 2.
NATIONWIDE: Tom Gillis (Pro V1, 695CB irons, Vokey Design wedges, Scotty Cameron Newport 2.5 putter) broke from the pack early in the final round of the Nationwide Tour Players Cup and went on to fire a 2-under 70 en route to his first Nationwide Tour win. Gillis finished with a 15-under 273 total, three strokes clear of Roger Tambellini (Pro V1x, 907D4 driver, 909F3 fairway metal, 909H hybrid, ZB irons, Vokey Design wedges, Scotty Cameron Studio Select Newport putter) and Cameron Percy (Pro V1). Jonas Blixt (Pro V1x, 909D2 driver, ZB and ZM irons, Vokey Design wedges) finished in solo fourth, as each of the top four finishers trusted Titleist for their success.
Titleist was the most played golf ball at the Nationwide Tour Players Cup with 92 players, more than five times the nearest competitor with 16. Titleist was also first in wedges (114) and putters (45), and second in drivers (21) and iron sets (29). The win was the 8th for Titleist players on the 2009 Nationwide Tour, more than twice the nearest competitor with 3.
SOUTH AFRICA: Brandon Pieters (Pro V1x), a 16-year veteran of the South African Tour, captured the Vodacom Business Origins of Golf title for his second win of the year and career. The event was reduced to 36 holes due to weather, and his 3-under 141 total was one shot clear of runner-up Clinton Whitelaw (Pro V1x), who posted his second consecutive top 5 finish. Callie Swart (Pro V1x) and Titleist Brand Ambassador Oliver Bekker (Pro V1x) were 3rd and 4th, respectively, as Titleist Pro V1x loyalists secured the top four places. Titleist was the most played golf ball at the event with 49 (68%) of the 72 players in the field, more than twice the nearest competitor with 19.
CANADA: Graham DeLaet (Pro V1x) fired a final round 8-under 64 to capture the ATB Financial Classic by four strokes over Byron Smith (Pro V1x). The two players were tied heading into the final round, trailing the overnight leader by one shot. DeLaet finished at 21-under 267.
WORLDWIDE WINS: With five more wins this week, the 2009 Titleist golf ball victory count advanced to 73, that’s more than four times the nearest competitor with 17.
