As a show of support for their Swedish team that will compete in the World Golfers Championship Oct. 24-31 in Marbella, Spain, Lotta Neumann and some of the other golf professionals from Sweden have made financial donations.
The World Golfers Championship was started 15 years ago by Swedish hockey star and golf organizer Sven Tumba, giving amateurs a chance to represent their countries in an international competition.
“We like the idea so much, that’s why I and some of my fellow golfers are more than pleased to support the participation of the Swedish national team,” Neumann said.
“It is a fantastic feeling to play for your country,” she added, pointing to several international competitions she had enjoyed both as a member of a team and as an individual.
The Swedish finals are scheduled Sept. 20 at Kyssinger Golf near Stockholm.
The United States team will be determined in a 36-hole qualifying scheduled Sept. 12-13 at the Spanish-themed Mission Inn Resort and Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, FL, which hosted the world finals last fall. The winners earn expense-paid trips to Spain to represent the U.S.
Bengtson indicated that clubs from across the U.S. are encouraged to conduct 18-hole qualifying events by Aug. 22 to determine a five-player team from the following handicap ranges-0-5, 6-10, 11-15, 16-20 and 21-25. The entry fee is $600 per club or $1,000 if a club wanted to send two teams.

Legendary professional golfer Arnold Palmer will continue in his role as a patron of the World Golfers Championship.
“Golf has truly become a global sport and the World Golfers Championship is a great indication of it,” he wrote to tournament organizer Sven Tumba of Sweden, who came up with the idea for the tournament 14 years ago.
“What I enjoy most about the World Golfers Championship is that all golfers, regardless of skill level, can participate and challenge golfers from all over the world in a fair competition,” Palmer added.
Addressing contestants, Palmer added that he was always pleased with the opportunity to represent the USA in such world-wide competitions and felt it was a “once-in-a lifetime experience” for all who qualify.

Seve Ballesteros, who is recovering from a couple of major surgeries, will continue as the honorary chairman of the World Golfers Championship.
In a letter to Tumba, Ballesteros thanked all involved in the tournament for their support and concern during the difficult time he is going through. “I am on the right path to recovery and wish the 2009 World Championship and the World Golfers Invitational taking place in October at the Costa del Sol the greatest success,” he noted.
“The venue is the most challenging and beautiful one and the climate and golf facilities in Marbella are among the best in the world to play and compete. Marbella is one of my favourite places to play golf and (I) would love to be in attendance.”
