First major championship sends PGA TOUR veteran to Bermuda and coveted spot in the most elite foursome in golf
PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla., – Stewart Cink, who survived a playoff with 59-year-old, eight-time major champion Tom Watson, earned the third spot in the most difficult tournament in the world to qualify for – the PGA Grand Slam of Golf – which will be contested Oct. 20-21, at Bermuda’s Port Royal Golf Course.
Cink battled his way into the playoff when he became one of the few players all day to birdie the 18th hole at Turnberry, which put the finishing touches on his final-round 1-under-par 69. Minutes later, Watson failed to get up-and-down from the back fringe, giving him a 72 and setting the table for the four-hole, aggregate playoff. Both players finished at 2-under-par 278. In the playoff, Cink parred the first two holes and birdied the third. Watson bogeyed the first hole and double-bogeyed the third – the par-5 17th – which spoiled his bid to win his sixth Claret Jug and make sporting history as the oldest player to win a major championship.
The PGA Grand Slam of Golf will once again air on TNT, where it is broadcast in prime-time to more than 89 million U.S. homes and an international audience of more than 100 countries. Comprised of the four major championship winners, the 36-hole PGA Grand Slam of Golf provides the best players in the world the opportunity to earn a spot in the most elusive and difficult foursome in all of golf.
Joining Cink, U.S. Open Champion Lucas Glover and Masters Champion Angel Cabrera – the 2007 PGA Grand Slam of Golf winner — in that foursome will be the winner of the 91st PGA Championship, Aug. 13-16, at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn.
