MIAMI, Fl (September 15, 2009) – Tonight on www.thegolfersnation.com tune in to see the final installment of a three-part series in which Jim McLean talks golf with Hall of Fame Golfer Jackie Burke, Jr. on “Classic Conversations”.
Burke, who won the 1956 Masters and 1956 PGA Championship, enjoyed some very special relationships while playing the TOUR. Burke, who authored “It’s Only A Game”, was able to call such legends as Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, and Ken Venturi “friends”.
After his storied career came to an end, Burke turned his attention to building a golf club, and he did – Champions – in Houston. Champions has played host to many tournaments on the PGA TOUR, including the TOUR Championship.
In this installment of “Classic Conversations”, Burke and McLean discuss, and analyze – in depth – the swing of Ben Hogan. And, Burke points out how disciplined Hogan was when it came to golf, and that it was that discipline that helped Hogan rise to the top of his profession.
“Hogan, he worked really hard. He always was disciplined, he always had clean shoes, the perfect belt and he always dressed nicely. Hogan had discipline, and that’s why he never failed,” said Burke. “It’s only a man who doesn’t have discipline that fails.”
Meanwhile, McLean, ranked as the No. 4 Instructor in the world, and owner of the No. 1 Ranked Golf Schools in America – the Jim McLean Golf Schools, has enjoyed a special relationship with Burke. In fact, McLean has invited Burke to the Jim McLean Golf School at Doral to conduct special one-of-a-kind golf schools.
When Burke’s book was published, McLean was one of several asked to write a foreword, and the final paragraph of that foreword reads as follows: “Jackie Burke is the most interesting person I’ve ever met. His influence has extended across the entire landscape of golf. Even those who don’t know him personally are beneficiaries of his desire to make the game better for all of us. I’m very proud to call him my good friend.”
Jackie Burke, Jr. is just the latest in a growing list of golf legends to be featured on “Classic Conversations” a signature show only available on www.thegolfersnation.com. Others who have appeared on “Classic Conversations” include Harvey Penick, and Ken Venturi. Future “Classic Conversations” will feature the first man to win golf’s modern Grand Slam – Gene Sarazen; and perhaps the greatest golfer to never win a Major Championship, “Lighthorse” Harry Cooper.
