MIAMI, Fl (September 29, 2009) – Gene Sarazen, the first golfer to win each of golf’s modern Major champions: The Masters; The U.S. Open; The British Open; The PGA Championship; will be featured on a new episode of Classic Conversations on www.thegolfersnation.com beginning tonight (September 29).
The interview, originally taped in 1989, will be broken down into two episodes (the second episode will debut in November). Sarazen touches on a myriad of topics including his rivalry with the immortal Walter Hagen, his idol Francis Ouimet, and his relationship with Bobby Jones.
Sarazen, who won his first Major Championship in 1922, the PGA Championship, also touches upon the early days of golf when Professional Golfers were thought of as second-class citizens. “It was something because you couldn’t get into the clubhouses because we were nothing but caddies (playing golf),” said Sarazen about the treatment of golf professionals during the early days of professional.
Sarazen also noted the difference between the camaraderie of today’s professional golfer versus the camaraderie of the golfers he played with, “the boys today, they pat each other on the back. In those days they’s cut each other’s throat.”
Sarazen, who passed in 1999 at the age of 97, carded 39 victories on the PGA TOUR, won the PGA Championship three times, the U.S. Open twice, and the British Open and Masters once each. Sarazen, like many of the early professionals, spent a great deal of time trying to improve the quality of golf clubs, invented the modern sand wedge and addresses his inspiration for the sand wedge in a later episode of Classic Conversations.
The “Squire” as he was known also talks about his introduction to golf, and later, his early impressions of a young golfer named Arnold Palmer.
Don’t miss the debut of the Gene Sarazen interview on www.thegolfersnation.com.
