Relies on New Cobra ZL Driver to Surge into Contention for the Race to Dubai
Carlsbad, California (November 2, 2009) – Cobra Brand Ambassador Ian Poulter returned to the form that has made him one of the most popular players in the world on Sunday, shooting a final-round one-over-par 72 in wet conditions to hold off a world-class field and capture the Barclays Singapore Open. The 33-year-old Englishman, who led from the opening round, finished at 10-under 274, one shot better than former Asian Tour number one-ranked player, Liang Wenchong.
After completing his third round earlier in the day, following three days of rain delays at Sentosa Golf Club, Poulter held onto his one stroke lead after reaching the turn in the final round in level par. With Liang in the clubhouse at nine under following a final round of 1-under 70, Poulter stood on the 18th tee with a one stroke lead. He made par to secure his first win since the 2007 Dunlop Phoenix in Japan, and his first on the European Tour since the 2006 Banco Madrid Valle Romano Open de Madrid Golf Masters.
Poulter’s win, the eighth European Tour title of his career, was also the first Tour victory for a player using the new Cobra ZL Driver. The ZL (which stands for Zero Limits) is a high-performance driver with a clubhead that is designed to maximize distance, accuracy and forgiveness. Available in stores this week for the first time, the ZL utilizes Advanced Multi-Material Construction to optimize ball speed and thus distance. The Titanium and Carbon Fiber clubhead also features a swingweight screw which helps shift the Center of Gravity (CG) toward the heel, to help provide draw bias ball flight- while maintaining a square clubface alignment. In addition, Cobra’s exclusive Adjustable Flight Technology features an adjustable hosel that golfers can set to one of three face angles (O-open, N-neutral, C-closed) to provide a simple and quick way to optimize their personal ball flight. Poulter plays the Cobra ZL 9.5, set to a neutral “N” position.
Poulter, who also trusted King Cobra Pro CB and MB irons for his success, did not hesitate to put the new ZL driver into the bag in Singapore stating, “It arrived last Wednesday and I left on Saturday. So I had literally two days to try it. I liked it so much I put it in the bag and now here we are with a win.”
The win at the Barclays Singapore Open (an event co-sanctioned by the European PGA Tour and Asian Tour) earned Poulter $833,330 and moved him up 19 places to 10th in the rankings for the European Tour’s Race to Dubai. In addition, Poulter now moves up to fourth in the 2010 Ryder Cup standings. He expressed being very satisfied with the timing of this week’s performance:
“It is the right time to win as the Ryder Cup points have now started and I wanted to come out over the next seven weeks – five of which are counting for world ranking points and Ryder Cup points – and put as much money on the board as I possibly could,” said Poulter.
As Ian Poulter now travels to China for the HSBC Champions event, his hopes high for a strong finish to the 2009 season, it’s another validating performance from a tenacious champion…and business as usual for a brand focused on developing innovative, high performance golf clubs.
