SAN DIEGO – Students from the Golf Academy of America (GAA) campus in San Diego recently helped comedian Will Ferrell raise more than $200,000 to benefit cancer survivors during the 17th Annual Cancer for College Golf Classic at the Rancho Bernardo Inn in San Diego, Calif. At the charity event, the 30 GAA students provided logistical and hands-on support for registration, hole-contest monitoring, dinner security and many other tasks.
“There are many ways to support cancer research, but there are very few options when it comes to helping cancer survivors who have endured so much. Cancer for College and the game of golf are a great combination,” says Rich Iorio, campus director at GAA San Diego. “We were very excited to have Golf Academy of America students available to help them during the tournament, and we’re eager to participate again next year.”
Cancer for College was formed in 1993 by Craig Pollard as a senior project while at the USC Business School. Pollards was a two-time cancer survivor and witnessed first hand the financial impact cancer can have on a family and the hope a college education can provide to a survivor. The organization works to provide hope and inspiration to cancer survivors and amputees by providing college scholarships and it delivers perpetual scholarships of $4,000/year for four years as well as other one-time scholarships ranging from $500 to $3,000. Cancer for College is a 501(c)3 charitable foundation that provides college scholarships to cancer survivors. Since its inception in 1993, the charity has granted over $1 million to more than 800 cancer survivors from around the country. For more information, visit www.cancerforcollege.org.
