The Gary Player International Golfer of the Year Award presented by FlightScope honors global legacy with a statuette of Player’s iconic victory.
ORLANDO, Fla. – The world’s best golfers battle it out this weekend at the prestigious Bellerive Country Club, the setting of one of Gary Player’s most iconic wins. That victory is perfectly encapsulated atop the trophy for the Gary Player International Golfer of the Year Award, presented by FlightScope in partnership with the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). The trophy and award itself serve as a standard of excellence and symbol of dedication from Gary Player, GCAA and FlightScope to the next generation of golfers.
In 1965, Gary Player defeated Kel Nagle in a playoff to win his fourth major. With that victory, Gary Player became just the third golfer in history and first non-American player to complete the career grand slam. The achievement cemented his place in golf history and was just the start of what would become Player’s global legacy.
Today, Player’s legacy continues through the Gary Player International Golfer of the Year Award presented by FlightScope. The award honors five outstanding collegiate golfers from outside the United States, one each for NCAA Divisions I, II and III, as well as NAIA and NJCAA. The award’s trophy carries a special connection to Player’s historic victory at Bellerive. The statuette atop the trophy recreates Player’s iconic celebration following his 1965 win.
“As I watch the tournament this week, it’s humbling to reflect on the historic performance of Gary Player all those years ago,” said Johan Immelman, brand director at FlightScope. “The Gary Player Award, presented by FlightScope in partnership with the Golf Coaches Association of America, is designed to capture that exact spirit. FlightScope is proud to present this award each year and strives each day to empower golfers with accurate performance data as they pursue excellence.”
As current golfers seek to write their own histories at Bellerive this week, they do so in the presence of an echoing victory. The Gary Player International Golfer of the Year Award presented by FlightScope stands as a permanent tribute to the moment a true global champion made history in St. Louis.
