SEASIDE, Calif. — The Northern California Section of the Professional Golfers’ Association is pleased to announce that Jason Schmuhl and Joseph Carlton of Windsor Golf Club (Windsor, CA) are the 2011 Bob D. Smith Memorial Pro-Assistant Champions with a final score of 4-under par 68. The Bob D. Smith Memorial Pro-Assistant Championship began in the late 1940’s and pairs a head professional and assistant together against other teams. This two-day championship was held at Bayonet & Blackhorse Golf Course (Par 72) in Seaside, Calif. on March 7-8, 2011.
With winds up to 30 MPH on Monday playing Blackhorse, the toughest of the two courses, Schmuhl and Carlton played a bogie free round with a 4 under par 68 finish for the first round. When the winds disappeared on day two at the Bayonet course, Schmuhl and Carlton played exceptionally well, adding another 6 under par to win the Pro-Assistant Championship with a 10 under par 134. This was not Jason’s first time winning this championship – he and partner Charlie Gibson took the title in 2005 at Coyote Creek GC.
Schmuhl’s win follows a very successful 2010 tournament season, when he earned the distinction of NCPGA Player of the Year (Regular Division). He won the same award in 2008 and currently serves as PGA Head Professional at Windsor Golf Club with more than 15 years teaching experience. Carlton is a PGA Assistant Professional at Windsor GC and is considered a master of the short game. He emphasizes that the occasional golfer can make great improvement from playing lessons.
The 2011 Pro-Assistant Championship is presented by Callaway Golf & Club Car and supported by AMA Golf & Sundog Eyewear. Detailed information about NCPGA events and programs can be found on the official Web site of the Northern California PGA, www.ncpga.com. For full results please visit
