Santa Cruz, Calif.- The San Jose State University men’s golf program is pleased to announce that representatives from the Sun SafeTee Program (SSTP) will be on site at the 65th Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo Golf Club on Friday, April 15, 2011 (College-Am-Practice Round). Joining SSTP reps will be dermatologists providing free skin cancer screening for players and coaches. In addition, they will distribute sun protection products and fact cards explaining SSTP’s Cover Up Before You Tee it Up ™ sun safety campaign.
“Sun SafeTee is looking forward to providing skin screening and sun protection education at the Western Intercollegiate, one of the most premier events in collegiate golf history,” said Mark Wishner, President & Founder of Sun SafeTee. “If we are able to increase awareness about the importance of sun protection with collegiate golfers today, we are paving the way for a healthier generation of golfers in the future.”
The Western Intercollegiate, which is held annually at Pasatiempo GC, an Alister-Mackenzie designed course in Santa Cruz, Calif., has 15 outstanding teams set to compete this weekend (April 16-17). Teams include: Augusta State, the defending NCAA Division I champion, plus Oregon who returns with hopes of winning a third consecutive Western Intercollegiate team title. Arizona State, San Diego State, Stanford, Cal, UCLA, Southern California and Washington are current top-30 nationally-ranked teams in the star-studded 15-team field.
According to PGA Head Golf Professional Ken Woods, Pasatiempo’s board of directors and staff are looking forward to this year’s Western Intercollegiate. “The field for the 2011 tournament is the best its been in recent memory,” expressed Ken Woods, “and I can’t wait to see how these very talented players take on MacKenzie’s masterpiece!”
Host San Jose State, New Mexico State, UC Irvine, and Colorado are four top-100 nationally-ranked squads that can compete meaningfully for the title, too. Denver and Hawaii round out one of the best spring tournaments in men’s college golf.
“I am extremely pleased that Sun SafeTee representatives will be on site at the 65th Western Intercollegiate,” said Spartan men’s golf coach John Kennaday. “While player performance is paramount to us as coaches, making sure our players take the appropriate measures to avoid skin cancer is always of utmost importance. As Sun SafeTee helps increase skin protection awareness in the golf community, hopefully, in turn, it will inspire golfers nationwide to share their knowledge with their friends, family and other golfers, too.”
