(VIENNA, Va.) — The Sea Pines Resort — home of iconic Harbour Town Golf Links and 54 holes of championship and resort golf on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina — has selected Buffalo Communications to create and implement a golf-focused publicity and media relations program.
Buffalo will target proven feeder and growth markets to drive revenue, while further bolstering Sea Pines’ national profile and course ratings and rankings for Harbour Town, the new Heron Point by Pete Dye and The Ocean Course, the island’s first golf course.
“Sea Pines Resort will always have one foot firmly rooted in its colorful and storied past,” says Cary Corbitt, Director of Sports Division of Sea Pines Resort. “However, it is vital we highlight the aggressive investments recently made to our facilities and infrastructure to stimulate leisure and group business.”
“Golfer acquisition, shifting market share and revitalizing the meetings and events segment are challenges all golf resorts face, even established brands like Sea Pines,” says Rich Katz, Managing Director of Buffalo. “We are excited to help Sea Pines achieve its short- and long-term goals.”
Opened in 1969 and site of the PGA TOUR’s The Heritage, the 5,000-acre property and its three-course collection on Hilton Head’s southern tip were aggressively updated over the past decade, fortifying it at the forefront of championship and resort golf worldwide.
Dye’s restrained tweaks to Harbour Town’s tees, bunkers and greens in 2000 reinforced the Dye / Jack Nicklaus layout as one of the premier TOUR venues in North America and a stalwart on every serious golfer’s dream “must-play” list.
In 2007, Dye completed a $9 million overhaul of the Sea Marsh Course resulting in a modern classic, the new Heron Point. Only the original corridors remain, as Dye and his shapers created an entirely new playing surface from limestone, sand and mulch that contrasts elegantly against native turf and ornamental grasses.
The 7,103-yard tapestry of short and long holes is woven amid newly-created lagoons and centuries-old Live Oaks. All the Dye signature elements are present: sprawling waste bunkers, railroad ties, fairway mounding and risk/reward greens which repel poorly-executed approach shots. Emanating from the same clubhouse as Heron Point, the Ocean Course has the unique distinction of being Hilton Head’s first golf course, opening in 1960. The George Cobb original design was updated by Mark McCumber in 1995 and claims one of the island’s only oceanfront holes, the signature Par-3 No. 15.
