HARDYSTON, N.J. (June 22, 2011) – Having qualified to play in the U.S. Women’s Open as a 12-year-old and earning a spot on the LPGA Tour at age 15, golf prodigy Alexis Thompson has numerous experiences and distinct insight to share. Through a mentoring program called “Red Bull Under My Wing with Alexis Thompson,” she will be inspiring and literally, giving wings to a group of local young girls in a unique, day-long gathering on Aug. 10 at Crystal Springs Resort. The 16-year-old Thompson, will be joined by eight leading junior girl golfers from the New Jersey area.
One of the United States’ most decorated amateur golfers, Thompson, a product of Coral Springs, Fla., was named Golfweek’s 2009 Women’s Amateur Player of the Year and the 2009 Junior Girls Player of the year. Along with being the youngest player to qualify for the U.S. Women’s Open, she has represented her country in the Junior Ryder Cup and Junior Solheim Cup, and was the youngest winner ever of the Junior PGA Championship in 2009. One of her older brothers, Nicholas, plays on the PGA Tour.
“It’s definitely helped me having older brothers,” said Thompson, who is a Red Bull Athlete. “We have these contests all the time. It’s made us more competitive and more driven.”
At the Crystal Springs Resort event, Thompson will be able to relate to the local girls’ dreams to play golf. “This is my dream,” she said. “I want to be out there. I love the game.” She can ask the girls if they are willing to spend as much time on the golf course as they do sleeping – 7 to 8 hours a day. She can reflect on what it was like to grow 3 ½ inches between ages 11 and 12.
Or, she can talk about real pressure: playing a five-hole loop in the evening against her brothers to see who gets stuck doing household chores. “It’s no fun losing and having to make everybody’s beds for the week,” she recalls.
The schedule for “Red Bull Under My Wing with Alexis Thompson” on August 10 is as follows:
8 a.m. Breakfast at Crystal Springs Tavern
9 a.m. Clinic with Alexis Thompson
1 p.m. Lunch at Crystal Springs Chef’s Garden
3 p.m. Non-golf activity (Mountain Creek zip line, or Crystal Springs Spa)
