Singapore (July 21): We kid you not! The 2011 Golf Course Superintendents Summit Of Asia (GCSAS 2011) is a three-day knowledge event specially designed to cater to the needs of practising superintendents and their staff.
The Summit, in its third year, has attracted a team of world-class speakers – professionals who are at the pinnacle of their trade and who possess intimate working knowledge of conditions in Asia.
These are men driven by a passion and dedication to turf and turf maintenance. They are at the cutting edge of new grass varieties; they know what’s suited for different soil and weather conditions; they are fully equipped with first-hand knowledge on how to battle pests.
Most importantly, the professionals who will be speaking at GCSAS 2011 are the experts who can help you and your staff maintain and protect the massive investments made on turf at your golf course!
Some of the stellar speakers who will be headlining GCSAS 2011 include:
Jon Scott
Vice President – Nicklaus Agronomy
Dr. Earl Elsner
University of Georgia
Dr. Milton Engelke (Zoysia expert)
Texas A&M University
Dr. Paul Raymer (Paspalum breeder)
University of Georgia
Dr. Brian Schwartz (Bermuda grass breeder)
University of Georgia
James Prusa
Director, Golf Courses & Lab – Sky 72 Golf Resort
Tim Curnow
Area Manager, South East Asia – Hunter Industries
Tim Cartwright
Vice President, Technical Services – Floratine
According to Mike Sebastian, CEO of the Asia Pacific Golf Group, the owner and producer of the event, “GSCAS 2011 will be a full blown Summit session that will be staged in conjunction with the 2011 Asia Pacific Golf Summit.”.
The University of Georgia’s Turfgrass team will conduct a one-day session with the focus on the following topics:
• Salt management
• Water management – irrigation management
• Fertility
• Pest management
• Seed heads management & plant growth regulators
• Current breeding issues
• Disease pressure development then handling diseases once they occur
• Limited light management (shade and extended cloudy conditions)
• Greens management – including preparing for a tournament
“GCSAS 2011 will be a really great opportunity for superintendents in Asia to listen to turf grass experts and receive invaluable knowledge that they can implement on their own courses,” Sebastian explained.
He went on to add, “As a golf course owner, operator or manager, you are fully cognisant of the need to maintain and keep your golf course in a pristine state at all times. If you have a golf course with poorly maintained turf and surroundings, you know what this is going to mean to your business.”
With this in mind, the organizers are drawing the focus to the golf course superintendent.
“He is your custodian and guardian ….. by our reckoning, and it will be a hard case to put down, the most important person in the running of a golf course is the golf course superintendent. This is the person charged with the massive responsibility of maintaining acres of turf on a sustainable basis throughout the year, regardless of all climatic conditions. He has to ensure that turf conditions are always disease-free, pristine and playable, even under the most stressful conditions,” Sebastian declared.
It’s a huge job order and it requires dedication, passion and a gigantic tolerance level to fight against frustrations – induced by Mother Nature and by demanding greens committees and members!
Sebastian continued, “We have recognized the plight of golf course superintendents in Asia and have decided to help them perform on their job better by exposing them to the best-of-breed knowledge and the latest state-of-the-art applications as it relates to all aspects of their job.”
GCSAS 2011 is a special tribute to all golf course superintendents throughout the geographic span of Asia.
GCSAS 2011 will be staged at the sprawling 5-star Royal Cliff Hotels Group in the beach resort city of Pattaya located on the Eastern seaboard of Thailand. The Summit dates are October 31 – November 2, 2011.
