Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. – The Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy and golf fitness experts Body Balance for Performance have even bigger plans for golf’s up-and-coming juniors for the 2011-2012 year.
Body Balance has worked together with GGGA to develop a one-on-one development program for students who are struggling with fitness and are excelling with fitness and need more. The plan is to help GGGA students who are lagging behind to catch up more quickly. Then students, who want to be challenged more, will also have the opportunity for more training.
The other big addition GGGA and Body Balance have made is out on the range. The entire time the students are on the range, they will have the assistance of the fitness team. As movements are debugged, the students will go to a fitness station on the range and will have integrated exercises, which should lead to tremendous increases in outcome and improvements with body movement, said David Ostrow, who heads Body Balance.
“Golf is a game where body motion plays an enormous role,” Gilchrist said. “If students can work on their functional movement while gaining more strength, control and flexibility, then that will allow them to stay injury free and will help them improve their swing in a much shorter period of time. To me, having the students improve their functional movement is essential.”
Body Balance for Performance and GGGA teamed up a year ago to offer students of the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy individualized training plans which in turn enables students to obtain their goals in golf faster and more completely.
Ostrow, a renowned physical therapist for more than 20 years, is considered by many to be an expert in the golf fitness industry and has spent his career developing a well-defined and effective approach for restoring the body to full function.
Ostrow sees the partnership as a perfect fit and has even higher hopes for year two.
“It’s an amazing opportunity for us to be part of this and to be part of maybe the top development program in the whole world,” Ostrow said. “It’s really great to have a team of coaches who really buy in to fitness. That helps the student be safe and more effective on the golf course.”
The Body Balance program will employ flexibility, stability, functional movement, strength, speed, endurance, and 3-D integrative exercises. Each type of exercise is designed to improve a specific area that is identified during a student’s assessment.
Students will participate in several different types of exercise circuits. They work in pairs in the circuits based on physical assessment results.
“David Ostrow and his team have been able to dramatically help our students,” Gilchrist said. “They’ve been able to help educate us as coaches to understand how the body moves throughout the golf swing. This helps the students keep their angles in their body motion, transfer their weight properly and keep their balance and coordination throughout their swing.”
