FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (August 30, 2011) – The Fallen Heroes Foundation probably puts it best when it says that Patriot Golf Day is as much a call to action in our time as war bonds and rationing were in times past.
The staffs of Bayonet at Puppy Creek and Cypress Lakes couldn’t agree more, which is why they’re again participating in this year’s event.
Patriot Golf Day is the annual flagship fundraiser for the Folds of Honor Foundation, providing postsecondary educational scholarships for the children and spouses of military men and women disabled or killed while serving. During Labor Day weekend (September 2-5), golfers across the country are asked to add an extra dollar to their greens fees to fund Folds of Honor scholarships. The Patriot Golf Day campaign is jointly supported by The PGA of America and the United States Golf Association.
Of course, as proud home of the 82nd Airborne and America’s first name in defense, Fayetteville is truly a city that knows what it means to be ready at a moment’s notice, which is why many of Fayetteville’s finest area golf courses that previously joined ranks with the city’s “Golf – On the Ready” promotion have re-enlisted to support Patriot Golf Day 2011.
At Bayonet Golf Club at Puppy Creek, a Willard Byrd design sculpted through the rolling hills surrounding Puppy Creek will be collecting donations over the four days of the campaign. With five sets of tees, this championship course has been created for golfers of all skill levels. Bayonet also offers the region’s largest and best conditioned practice area, including a 20-acre golf practice facility featuring 10 target greens and a short-game area.
Cypress Lakes will also take special collections and conduct closest-to-the-pin contests. In addition, on the Saturday following Thanksgiving, Cypress Lakes will hold its annual golf tournament to raise additional funds for this most worthy cause. Best known as the original home to the Floyds (Raymond and Marlene), Cypress Lakes challenges and delights the most avid golfers with championship-caliber greens and prime playing conditions nurtured over the past decade. Stretching from 5,800 to 7,000 yards, Cypress Lakes is an extremely fair course to play with no blind shots to the greens.
Patriot Golf Day provides golfers with the opportunity to give back to those who have given everything. Captain Dan Rooney of the Oklahoma Air National Guard, a former college and professional golfer and a veteran of three tours of duty in Iraq, spearheaded Patriot Golf Day during Labor Day weekend 2007.
Captain Rooney felt that a small sacrifice has the potential to make a huge difference in the lives of surviving family members of soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice. To Rooney, golf was the natural choice to achieve such a lofty goal on a national scale – and a good choice it was. No other sport has such participation on a daily basis as golf. The sheer number of golfers makes it possible for a substantial amount of money to be raised.
