Second-annual “Dormie Cup” fundraiser at renowned Dormie Club features a “War between the States,” a special birthday greeting for a legend of the game and an outstanding cause, as more than $25,000 to benefit Wounded Warriors and others
MOORE COUNTY, N.C. (October 18, 2011) – This weekend’s second-annual Dormie Cup in West End, N.C., turned into a war between North and South (Carolina). But even the keen competition on the golf course was overshadowed by tournament events away from the playing field that the participants will remember most.
Playing one round in a Best Ball format and a second Alternate Shot on the masterful, par-71 design by the legendary team of Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore, the North Carolina team of Philip Kelley and Benji Schlottman of Advance, N.C., fired rounds of 65 and 76 for a 141 total, edging the Leesville, S.C., team of brothers, Caleb and Cody Proveaux, who shot rounds of 66 and 76 respectively for sole possession of second place.
Named after its host facility and initiated by participants Patrick Cover (Huntersville) and Thomas Walsh (High Point) as a way to give back to the community, the Dormie Cup started in 2010 when a dozen junior golfers gathered at Dormie and divided the group into two teams of six for a match-play tournament modeled after the Ryder Cup – its initial Dormie Cup donation totaling more than $10,000.
This year’s event featured 24 nationally-ranked junior golfers from North and South Carolina playing a two-man team competition to decide the winners on Sunday afternoon. Each participant was challenged to raise a minimum of $1,000 as the group raised well over $25,000 for the three charities chosen to receive the funds.
Some funds raised will be distributed to the First Tee Program of the Sandhills and the American Junior Golf Association Scholarship Program – two outstanding organizations that provide funds for needy junior golfers to travel and compete in high-level events. Yet, the majority of the funds raised will benefit the Wounded Warrior Program, which assists veterans who return from action with injuries in their efforts to adjust to life back in the United States.
The funds raised during the Dormie Cup will help in enlisting public support, providing aid to those in need and providing programming and services to our men and women.
The participants also collected 351 new golf hats to send to the troop overseas.
Adding to the festivities, prior to Saturday’s first round of play, Dormie Cup participants surprised golf legend and local resident Peggy Kirk Bell, who turns 90 on October 28, with a birthday card and a rendition of “Happy Birthday.” Bell and her son-in-law, former PGA Tour pro Pat McGowan, then watched all the boys hit off the first tee and stayed at Dormie to visit during the opening round.
In addition there were two Wounded Warriors (also Purple Heart awardees), who followed the boys and caddied during the tournament. The decorate duo and Lee Sargent – a participant’s father who served in Vietnam also has a Purple Heart and other awards – talked to the participants and parents at a cookout Saturday night.
Finally at this year’s event, keeping a focus on fundraising efforts and those most deserving of the boys’ efforts, tournament organizers established a “Charles G. McCartney Award” that was awarded to David Sargent of Cornelius in recognition of his fundraising efforts, his sportsmanship, and how he represents the game of golf and the American spirit. The award is named for Thomas Walsh’s great uncle, “Chuck,” who twice received the Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for wounds sustained in the Battle of the Bulge under General Patton’s command.
Third place in the weekend’s competition was captured by Davidson, N.C.’s William Gordon and Clay Brown with145, while Thomas Walsh of High Point, N.C., and Ross Robison of Wilmington, N.C., shared fourth at 146 with Kyle Fuller of Huntersville, N.C., and Ben Dietrich of Bluffton, S.C.
