HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA – November 16, 2011 – Cleveland® Golf/Srixon® congratulates staffer Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño for his playoff victory in the European Tour’s 2011 Barclays Singapore Open over the weekend at Sentosa Golf Club. Fernandez-Castaño, a native of Madrid, Spain, outlasted the runner-up with a birdie on the second extra hole to win the rain-shortened 54-hole event and end a three-year title drought.
Earlier this year, Fernandez-Castaño was sidelined for six months with back problems and contemplating complex surgery that may have ended his professional golf career. But the 31-year-old avoided surgery and returned to action, gaining momentum with two solid finishes on his home soil last month – a second-place effort in the Castelló Masters and a tie for 12th in the Andalucía Masters. Those performances and the win in Singapore have revived his career, vaulting him from 188th in the Official World Golf Rankings just three months ago all the way up to 58th. He also moved into 15th place in the Race to Dubai, which goes a long way toward securing his spot in the season-ending Dubai World Championship. The Barclays Singapore Open victory was Fernandez-Castaño’s fifth European Tour title and first since the 2008 British Masters.
“It has been a great relief,” said Fernandez-Castaño. “I just wanted to come back from my injury and play well again. What I did until this week was pretty amazing, and winning the title is unbelievable.”
