Future Champions Golf will host the Golfweek Junior Tour West Series Spring Tour Championship this weekend, May 26-27th at the Greg Norman Course at PGA West. The event is a 36-Hole Nationally Ranked Event for junior golfers age 9-19. Over 80 players are set to play in this event and the field is very strong.

Although originally capped at a field of 60 players Tournament Director Antrone Williams says that like last year’s event the size of the field will be allowed to expand as the entry deadline draws near. In 2011, the field expanded to accommodate 80 players.

According to Williams, this year’s field is talent-laden.

“The boys field always fills up,” Williams said. “Our boys field will be ridiculous. In the field is a Junior World champion, last year’s runner-up Ricky Castillo (in the 11-12 division) and an AJGA winner Bobby Gojuangco.”

Gojuangco enters the event having notched prestigious wins in the 2011 PGA Junior Series at Eisenhower Golf Club and the 2012 FCG Western States.

The event will serve as a double points tournament regarding the Player of the Year for the Spring Series. The Spring Series Players of the Year in the boys and girls older divisions will receive AJGA performance stars.

The venue of the event also has some major attraction. PGA West is an icon of professional golf and hosts the PGA Tour every year on its courses including the Norman course. According to Williams, the Norman course is a great stage for this type of event.

“It’s the first time for the tour (on the Norman course),” Williams said. “There are lots of bunkers and a little bit of water, but it’s mostly scenic. Most Greg Norman courses are known for their bunker placements. Later this summer FCG will host their 4th Annual World Championship at PGA West. Just a few weeks back Odyssey Golf became the title sponsor of this prestigious golf event.

“There’s not a lot of rough and it’s surrounded by desert. It’s a proper test of golf. If you’re not hitting it very well then you’re not going to score very well. But if you play well, it can be relatively easy.”
